I rented the NT1006 from the NRCS. I could not get the small seed box to work at all. I was able to get the main seed box to drill rye somewhat. When I mixed Balansa clover with annual ryegrass and put that in the main seed box it was reluctant to come out. I kept on increasing the opening size but it barely came out. When I was just about to run out of time I maxed out the seed opening to notch 4. It still took another 8 acres to expel 100 pounds of seed. It could be that it was because it was a rental tool from a government agency that received no maintenance or it's just a piece of junk. I cost me $588 to drag it around 37 acres. I still have four bags of clover left to plant. I will broadcast with a pto seeder into the grooves cut by the planter. Next time I will disc as lightly as possible and broadcast. My NRCS office only has competent people in the office on Wednesday and Friday. Great Plains does not even have a customer service number to serve its customers. They want you to call their dealers. The dealers sell them as a side item to their main business.
@hunterworksoutdoorsКүн бұрын
I can't say much about this, when I call Great Plains I get someone who is plenty helpful but I can only imagine trying to use something used and worn out and not getting taken care of. While they are very expensive to buy, after two year of use I only have like 10 acres on mine so it still works like new and will for years. Love it.

Did you have an exclusion cage in the plot that only had sorghum that came up? The reason I ask is because I had something similar happen. Inside the exclusion cage all of the plants had come up. Outside of the cage the only thing was sorghum. The deer had eaten everything except the sorghum which made it look like nothing germinated except the sorghum.

After reading the comments, I feel sorry for you. You've taken on yourself to do all the work, not only the regular field and plot work, but also the extra time and expense of the camera and editing work to bring these videos to hopefully be helpful to everyone. And then, some negative Neds out there reply with criticism and arrogance, and some of which reveal they either didn't watch the whole video, or are really stupid, because you already answered their question in your video. I just wanna say thank you for your efforts. I have enjoyed learning from many of your experiences, and not just from this no-till stuff, but also the Polaris ranger clutch replacement with an impact that helped me. I just cringe when someone snaps back with a comment that seems like they think they're an expert, and you didn't have a clue. Everyone has to start somewhere and go through a process of learning. Documenting your process and showing the good and bad lessons learned is really helpful to many. At least you're trying something, and having the courage to show the whole world, good or bad. I respect and appreciate that.

I know you're practicing the no-till method, but do you have any plots that you're still turning over with a harrow? I'm asking because I have a few larger plots, close to 1 acre that I will attempt to no-till this spring -, and I have several small hidey-hole plots at 1/8 -1/4 acre. I'm curious if just a light disc and then broadcast / cultipack to press in. Since it's my first year at no-till , I'm reluctant to try it with all my plots, make sense?

The grownup field looks good for fawning and turkey nesting cover. I like to leave my fields standing until time to plant fall plots. At that time I bush hog them after planting. However, I don’t plant summer plots in them. What about planting a few fields in straight clover and then drill elbon in the fall after the clover gets established?

Dude your channel is awesome and I am so glad you continue to post updates even if things don’t go as planned! Thank you for sharing !
I just don’t see the need for a 18k no till drill. I think dr grant woods and others are getting a big kick back on promoting these things. You can spray standing vegetation. Broadcast 100lb/acre of cereal rye. Mow or roll the vegetation over the rye seed. You’ll have a nice standing rye plot that you can do the same thing to the following year and plant whatever you want.
@hunterworksoutdoors Жыл бұрын
maybe but some seeds do not come up well broadcast and you waste a lot of seed. You just told me, you go over your field at least three times, you left out fertilizer, so that is four times. We hit it one time two tops, huge time saver. Another good use of the drill is say spreading 8lbs of clover over a field, what you gonna do that with accurately? A drill is not for everyone. I like ours and I like having good ground contact with the seed. So it really depends on what you want to do and what seed you are planting. Trying planting soybeans like that, lots of videos about that and they rarely turn out good, that seed needs to be planted 1 1/2" deep to do well. I will add, our video is not for anyone without a drill, it is for those with one or fixing to buy one and needs a leg up. These are really for the folks that have committed to the drill.

How much success in your food plot do you attribute to your sprinklers? How often have you had to supplement nature's rain (or lack of rain)? Here in SC, with sandy soils and often less than 1" of rain in summer months, it might be more sense spending the $$ trying to irrigate rather than in No-Till equipment.
