great recording, I remember when the communists ruled our country, I copied this song from the album because I didn't have access to sheet music and I only made one mistake in the harmony (I'm bragging a bit)

The singing is lovely, but the part writing in this piece and the overall results are baffling to say the least. Why would you have so many unnecessary and, frankly, clumsy parallelisms between voices? There are things to be praised in the piece, but the lack of expertise in the handling of voice leading and apparent non-understanding of harmony, doublings, etc. is perplexing. You're most probably going to delete this comment - maybe rightly so - but, if you truly care about the craft of writing music and call yourself a "composer", you should take stock of what you're actually writing and spend some serious time on learning how to write music. You simply cannot write good/great coral music without a good handle on counterpoint and harmony. And it shows. Good luck.

Twenty-four hours or so, and you've done it again! Why have I never heard these songs before? I'm listening at my home here in Cheshire, England, UK. It's almost embarrassing to be introduced to great English music this way. But I'll take the embarrassment if it means I get to hear such enjoyable, jubilant sounds. I again love, love, love the clarity and precision of your joyous rendition. What Christmas treats you're giving us!
@rockymountainchamberchoirАй бұрын
That brings us a lot of joy! There are so many wonderful pieces of music out there, it's bound to happen that some get lost or forgotten when programming Christmas concerts and we want to remind people of these wonderful classics that are fully available in the public domain! C. Hubert Parry was really a master at harmonization and writing for choirs. Thanks again so much for listening and taking the time to comment! We have a few more surprises coming up for the Christmas season...!

That's a foot-tapper! I love the clarity with which you sang each part, and to hear bass as well as soprano. I'll be listening to that again, thank you! I haven't heard this song before. Is this arrangement close to Vaughan William's original?
@Aa.Rr.2023Ай бұрын
KZbin shows me this isn't a radically different arrangement. I've just never heard the song before. But I like your rendition the best. It's the crispness, the confidence with which each of you sings, and the intimacy - as if I'm standing amongst you as you sing. I like it!
@rockymountainchamberchoirАй бұрын
So this arrangement is BY Ralph Vaughan Williams, which he based on a traditional carol. He was quite interested in collecting folk tunes around his home country, something that was a trendy thing for several choral composers of his time. Our soprano on this recording, Kiersten, wrote a pretty interesting blog post about this song you can find on our website for more in-depth stuff on it. But I agree! I’ve sung this song many times over the years and it’s so much fun to sing, and rewarding!
