Mel - fantastic video! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I've been curious to hear people's experience using the 3x3 since it was announced, but it remains tough to find firsthand perspectives online. You answered so many questions I've had, and the commenter/reply about efficiency was on my mind as well. Minor question - you mentioned the two are similarly noisy out of the box. I tried a friend's Rohloff and noticed that the upper gears were substantially quieter, which was nice because most riding on flat terrain seemed to be in (quieter) gears 8 or 9. I think there was even one gear (7?) that was much noisier than the rest. Is the 3x3 is also quieter in the upper range?
@RecumbentPDXАй бұрын
My experience was that if you’re in the proper gear for the speed you’re traveling, it’s fine. But, if you’re in a climbing gear while flying down a steep, it makes a racket as soon as your gear up (7-9), it sounds perfect. Mine has less than 1000 miles on it. says it gets better over time.

Great video thank you. Do you have an opinion on the efficiency of the hubs? While an enviolo has a poor (~80%) efficiency and a Rohloff a great (~95%) efficiency, close to a derailler. What about the 9?
@RecumbentPDXАй бұрын
Excellent question. I never asked. And I see it’s not on the website. When I talk to our distributor, I’ll ask them to forward that question 3x3. I ride without a motor, so it matters to me. Most of our customers ride with motors. It doesn’t matter to them
@VincentPichon-g5vАй бұрын
@@RecumbentPDX Here is the anwer of 3x3 ! "We don´t have the number of efficency, because you can not compare them. We did a test with incline testing at Dekra and got 15% more mileage compared to enviolo"
@VincentPichon-g5vАй бұрын
So the hub should definitely be more efficient than the enviolo, which is good news

Hi Mel, for the 3x3 lubricant grease is recommended to be replaced every 15,000 miles according to European websites.
@RecumbentPDXАй бұрын
There could be reasons why that's a European requirement, but not in the US. Our distributors, Vapor Propulsion Labs, specifically state "no maintenance". If that changes, you'll hear about it right here!!

Hello Paul & Jack, I'm hoping you can help me. I've been running a Rohloff E14 on my MTB for sometime now, I puchased a Rohloff electronic shifter kit supposedly plug & play but the kit did not have the cable to go between the Bosch system & the Rohloff the local Bosch agent sold me a cable to go from my Gen 4 Performance line CX HPP output with 4 wires & no instruction on where to connect them to the Rohloff DC/DC CAN. I've been trying for weeks to get a made up harness or a wiring diagram. I don't mind paying you for any parts or information, I just want to get it working. Please help

This is the best video I've seen on e-assist for trikes. I purchased a used Ice Trike with a 750 watt Bafang motor with throttle. The throttle only works if the trike is at a standstill and needs to get going. It is very helpful when crossing streets. Is there any way I can get an e-assist with throttle and torque sensing motor?
@valkrys684 ай бұрын
I bought the Bafang 750w motor as the bang for the buck e-assist motor system. On relatively flat roads, not towing or packing weight, my Catrike 559 can get about 90 miles on a charge. Pulling a Burley Nomad with 45# of gear, I got 62 miles on a single charge while crossing the USA last year. Going over the Appalachian Mountains, we got about 47 miles a day. Ditto the Rocky Mountains.

Totally agree, beware of modifications that are not approved by the manufacturer. As for buying off the internet, I bought my Dumont off of Marketplace. I made an 8 1/2 hour drive to see it and test rode it before I bought it. Prior to this I had ridden several trikes and determined the Dumont was the trike for me. And what I bought was a 3 year old Catrike Dumont in like new condition and at a price that was more than worth driving for a day to get. If you do decide to by used, don’t buy a trike that’s been heavily modified. Do test ride it, never buy one sight unseen or untested. And if possible take to a bike shop and have it looked over for potential issues before you put down any cash. A seller unwilling to let do these things should not be trusted. After you get your trike, temping that it is to just go for a ride, take it into a qualified mechanic, one that is qualified to work on your particular trike and have it serviced, nothing is more annoying then the get down the trail and find out your have a bad tire because the rubber is older than you chain derailer or chain failed because it should have been replaced.

can those trikes carry as much gear as a regular bike, like for bikepacking? how does the trike compare to a mountain bike on the trails you were on?
@RecumbentPDX7 ай бұрын
Depends more on the rack than the trike. I've hauled as much as 50lbs on my trike. The performance on trails depends on the trail. If it's rails-to-trail, a trike is great. You wouldn't get one of these down single track, though -too wide. Also, triking is not really conducive to bombing down rutted fire roads -which is why our customers don't do it!

Great opportunity. The best thing to also have is an easy device to measure the X-seam so they can test ride one already set at that approximate length.

i have a nice looking catrike rear hub, 7-8 gears. i put it on a regular 26 inch wheel for a regular mtb. then i realized, truing this will be a hell, because the freewheel only goes one direction. and this will also create problems during rides. sometimes the bike needs to go backwards, and this mechanism does not allow. any suggestion?
@RecumbentPDX7 ай бұрын
Hi. I'm not understanding your specific situation, so can't give an opinion. Though, it sounds like the hub is "fixie" style., so I agree with you that it doesn't seem workable on a trike.
@west_park79937 ай бұрын
@@RecumbentPDX no,no i tried to make a classic 26 inch 32 spoke wheel, but it did not work. i like it because it has sealed bearings. however, when installed on the truing stand, it only turns one way. i.e. if you are on a bike, you can not turn the pedals backwards. and this is ok on a trike, but not acceptable for a bike. also, the boss, the organizer of the bike house, asked me to keep it for him, and install it back on a 20 inch wheel for a trike, one day.

What's your take on quad vs trike on things like trails, or the beach or pulling a trailer. The nameless outfit aside, companies like TrikExplor, Trisled and Pony4 seem to make reliable quads that would seem to make a favorable argument against a trike. That said, I'm also looking at the ICE Full Fat XL and interested in your opinion.

I don't like quads and I don't like Fat's. That's personal opinion. It informs my professional opinion: I don't sell either. But, my opinions are meaningless -if you can safely enjoy a particular cycle, that's what you should be on!

Hear hear! I bought my 700 in 2008. Since then I have seen all kinds of mods. My response has always been, “If you want a 700, buy a 700,” or whatever trike you really want. Because of the heightened CG, as you mentioned, I didn’t even like the change to 20” wheels in the front, (though I understand the pressure from customers to have more tire options). I tried it and after years of 16” wheels, I felt like I was up high on a Freightliner. I would never risk the kinds of cornering that I do with my original 700, entering a 90° corner at 27mph: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imnMoYCBndKDiMUsi=iU9GdtVFHz9_sKh8

Neither of us is a 1st amendment attorney. Me - because I so state - and you - because your childlike understanding demonstrates it. That said, you are correct: Free speech is not universal in our household. So, understand that if you come to my house to insult my wife or mother-in-law, you’ll be tossed onto the sidewalk. But, if you continue your insults once removed to public property and I hastily re-arrange your facial features, I’ll soon learn that your ACTUAL 1st amendment rights render my “but his big mouth!” legal defense “non-colorable” as the lawyers say. But, DO invite me as an observer when you try that shit after a guest compares your spouse to a bovine and speculates on that strong odor wafting from your MIL -and you then spend the next two weeks on the couch mumbling in your sleep about “free speech”. Because KZbin ain’t a public forum, I could simply delete your silly comment. But, it’s so entertaining that I won’t!

Totally agree with your video and I've been building, riding, and working on trikes for nearly 20 years. I have experience with most brands too. I see no reason for any trike to have front wheels larger than 20 inch. The only good reason to have a larger wheel on the rear is if you are a strong rider and need taller gearing. If you put 24" or 26" wheels on the front of a tadpole trike, you will need a 40 acre field to simply make a turn. There are reasons engineers design things the way they do.
@RecumbentPDX10 ай бұрын
Thank you. We JUST got back from Catrike. Was fortunate to spend time with Justin and Marco -their phenomenal engineers. They spend thousands of hours designing each trike -from concept to CAD-CAM to prototype to production. They know PRECISELY what they're doing. The guys in Utah have zero idea.
@fredludwig224111 ай бұрын
Well, I guess I will be the first person to say I have this modification on my Catrike Road AR and I love it. I am currently running the 20 inch rear wheel with the extenders. Gives me the same gearing, but with a longer wheelbase it gives a smoother ride. Have not found the trike tippy with either the 20” or the 26” rear.
@RecumbentPDX10 ай бұрын
America is a wonderful place. You can put your personal opinions into operation through your purchases. But, the fact remains that the Extenders are a demonstrably-dangerous modification to a trike that requires no modification. If I had to speculate, the "squishiness" of the extenders serves as a kind of suspension -smoothing your ride -but at the expense of longterm frame integrity. For fun, you might call the Catrike factory and ask if their drop outs ever break and, if so, whether there is ANY specific modification that routinely causes that breakage!

I have a trike Scorpion FS 26 PE hub motor it fails sometimes and I can’t ship it on planes to tour in other countries , so I add a Rohloff 14 speed hub, with my 12 Speed pinion gearbox gives me 152 gears had a great experience touring in New Zealand Climbs over Mountains with ease but with my gear and cameras + the Trike weight it’s slower then I like. Been studying some of the motor you mentioned, kinda know what I want if buy a motor it will be 750 w. Don’t want to buy China, so price determines whether I buy or not! I can see spending $4,000. More on my trike when it’s great as a trail rider, and my Quatrevelo is the fastest bike I have without the need of a motor So I guess I’ve talked my self out buying a motor in writing this comment, thanks for not mentioning prices. By the A scorpion FS 26 can be class 3 moped so 750 motor can be added.
