I was 17 and bought my first guitar (1956 Fender Tele & Pro Amp) & was learning guitar in 1958 I would play along with Hank Ballard & the Midnighters records for hours - - My band got our first "gig" playing 2 hours Friday & 2 hours Saturday nights - we were "The Vibrants" and played R&R for an hour, and Jelly (J.R.) Sanders Band played country music for an hour at the Pumpkin Center Barn just a few miles west of Bakersfield CA,1959. I would sing the "Annie" songs, Hank Ballard etc. and Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. . I finally moved to L.A. area & left country music & Bakersfield behind. . until Waylon, Willie, Merle, etc. introduced "Outlaw" country . .

Once you've heard this you'll never forget it-- the harmonies! The syncopations. I wonder if Little Righard had heard it. He was a Gospel singer before Tutti Frutti [and after]-- but the bop bop a loo bop at the tag of thie intro to this song[ after the "hold it hit it tie it" bit locks the rhythm into place] sure sounds like the root of Little RIchard's A lop bop a loo bop al lop bam boom....

I saw Hank Ballard and the Midnighters once; outdoors at the Chicago Blues Festival in 1988. I remember it pretty well; they were dressed "to the nines" (in pink suits with ruffled shirts I think) and they all had parasols as props (kind of a hilarious look). They did all the hits you would expect: "Work With Me Annie" , "Annie Had a Baby", Hootchie Kootchie Koo", "The Twist", "Finger Poppin' Time" etc. A great memory, triggered by watching this video, I'm grinning ear to ear. It's crazy to think that the Number One R&B hit "Work With Me Annie" was banned from many radio stations when it was released in 1954 . The word "Work" in this song is a euphemism for another 4 letter word that also ends with k, which is of course the reason that "Annie Had a Baby" in the follow up hit, which is consequently the reason she "can't work no more". There is a clever reference to this song in the 1985 Blasters' song called "Rock and Roll Will Stand" where the passage of time is illustrated by the lyric: "Annie's little baby has grown up to be a man, and everybody knows rock and roll will stand".
