Since when did humans become animals? Why do we have this tendency to downgrade ourselves? The fact that humans are having lots in common with other living creatures does not make them the same. Humans have a massive distinctive difference from the rest of the living things, and it is a critical thinking, complicated philosophy, highly intellectual scientific work! That tendency to devaluate humans to the level of instincts of the normal animal world is absolutely unacceptable!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🌍 *Governance systems steer individual and social behavior to reach shared goals and address specific problems identified by society, including collective action problems.* 00:56 🤝 *Complex systems and uncertainty challenge governance systems, like in the case of Global Climate Agreements, which struggle with spatial and membership mismatches.* 02:50 🧩 *Increasingly, governance faces problems for which standard practices don't fit well, such as climate change, prompting the need to expand the toolkit of governance practices.* 04:48 🏗️ *Governance focuses on steering human behavior in response to societal problems, with mechanisms designed to create, implement, and evaluate governance systems.* 11:29 🏛️ *Implementation and effectiveness of governance systems are critical, as legal challenges can impact their functioning, as seen in the Clean Power Plan.* 16:16 ♻️ *Governance performance criteria include effectiveness, sustainability, efficiency, equity, and resilience, depending on the context of the issue.* 26:52 ❄️ *Researcher has worked extensively on large-scale systems, including atmospheric issues, climate change, marine issues (e.g., fisheries), and the Polar Regions, highlighting the impact of climate change in the high latitudes.* 28:44 🌐 *The "problem of fit" in governance systems involves spatial mismatches, like those seen in migratory bird populations, where governance across jurisdictions is crucial for effective management.* 29:43 🌍 *In complex systems like migratory patterns, spatial compatibility is a significant challenge due to the need for different regions to match.* 30:14 🌐 *Membership mismatches, as seen in agreements like the Kyoto Protocol, can arise when commitments don't adapt to changing circumstances, such as China becoming a major greenhouse gas emitter.* 32:08 💧 *Formula or allocation mismatches can occur when resource allocation mechanisms, like the Colorado River Compact, don't account for the variable nature of the resource.* 34:30 🌿 *Some governance systems effectively match the biophysical and socio-economic circumstances, while others fail to do so.* 36:54 🌊 *Large-scale systems, like the management of the Rhine River, have achieved success in improving water quality through effective governance.* 37:49 ❄️ *The Antarctic Treaty System has been successful in preserving Antarctica for peaceful and scientific purposes, showing effective governance on a global scale.* 38:16 🌎 *As we enter the Anthropocene, challenges related to fit in complex systems are increasing due to globalization, human domination of systems, and teleconnections.* 44:05 🔀 *Bifurcations, rather than oscillations, are becoming characteristic of complex socio-ecological systems, raising questions about the adaptability of traditional governance models.* 45:03 🪄 *Governance systems need to be agile and nimble to respond quickly to changing circumstances and avoid lock-in effects, which can hinder adaptability.* 46:54 ⚖️ *The focus on legally binding and entrenched regulatory systems may not align with the need for agile governance in the face of complex challenges in the Anthropocene.* Made with HARPA AI

There are no 'classical' (true) economists of the Adam Smith mold around today. Contemporary "economists" ar all political economists, not concerned with achieving maximum outputs with minimum inputs. but only concerned with how outputs are redistributed once they are produced.

Why would you want to move to the complex? It begs the question if our lives are more complex; or that we are surrounded by complex narratives. Let's take motherhood. It isn't that complex; unless you notice the encroaching opinions, state, policies etc on personal lives. Maybe that is just the fact that we poor so many people in cities?

10:54 -- This is why i have, so far at least, chosen NOT to pursue a PhD or to work primarily in academia. Excess emphasis on concepts and theory squeezes out reality. While ever more theorists talk about reality, human actions are leading ever more species -- possibly including our own -- right up to, and for far too many species, already, over the cliff of extinction. Sociology is far too important to remain theory-focused and -driven. Sociologists, along with economists, historians, philosophers -- and really all other "social scientists", academics, and scientists, would do well to shut down all universities for at least a year in order to walk and travel deep into the world, without any books or papers, equipped only with an open heart and a deep desire and ability to observe and listen to the ever-more dramatic plight of humans, sentients, and life-systems everywhere.

I love sharing this with my "Living in the Anthropocene" class (where we imagine different ways we might live in the future, based on anthropological data about different ways humans have lived in our entire history). And I love telling them that Paige is also super nice & funny & has crazy style sense! Thank you, Paige, for helping me to help my students adapt to a very frightening future.
