My first thought was not in the context of the whole Also not a job I would want but want to see it realised . This road to change needs a Rory to spearhead it. The question is to sell books or to achieve real game changing impact. I respectfully disagree that the future is unknowable I’m living proof that it is.

IMO the seeming two worlds come together to represent, as you put it the art of marketing; it’s not an equation. In that there is really no definite control. “Success” is often attributed in hindsight, and there’s always survivorship bias. If Tesla tanks, the discount will be popularly considered as a failure. If Tesla dominates, then folks will laud the flexibility. Just like with Seth’s bet against the WWW. Had it failed, Seth would have been in a great position, but that the WWW panned out, it was a multi billion dollar mistake as he puts it. There are perils either way. IMO great marketers make an informed choice as best possible and go with it. They recognise that luck is an element in anything happening. IMO the number one problem Tesla has is production quality. Even after all these years, Tesla continues to be notorious for QA issues, which I can only assume is primarily an engineering, technical problem. Whether to cross the chasm, or to be a premium brand only for a select group, they need to sort out their production issues as the priority. An overt solution to this is to hire expertise. Expertise that can either produce higher quality output, and/or expertise that can augment production methods so that it requires less skill/finesse or parts can be produced more reliably. The marketing aspect to this is that Tesla has an existing brand name that will draw folks. It’s a brand name employer. Marketing needs to help shift/evolve Tesla’s culture and brand from “cool car, new tech, innovation” to “high finish, high tech, high performance”. It’s not a huge leap, as is Teslas already boast some of the highest performance even vs other EVs. High tech doesn’t need to be the latest tech. In any case, their self driving tech has yet to yield fruition. High tech just needs to be more advanced or seem more advanced than the typical ICE car experience (again, something marketing can come in on). It’s the high finish that they need to evolve into. They are not dissimilar to the line of cameras Sony put out. They were notorious for shutting down due to overheating issues. So much so that it was a meme for several years. But they’ve since resolved that and no one mentions much of it anymore. It’s really solidified their hold on the camera market. They have some of the best tech, the build and make is solid enough to not have glaring issues, and they in fact often charge more than the competitors. Marketing also needs to help change the brand story of Tesla in the eyes of the public. The folks that Seth Godin mentioned who couldn’t care less, will also likely value reliability. They just want something that just works. Possibly having something a bit fancy like a Tesla brand might also be a nice to have to get customers over the hump of the buying decision. The marketing team needs to be able to make a promise to the customer it can keep. That the car, that the charging network will just work. To develop that narrative. IMO I don’t think Tesla will stay premium and niche. It seems like the desire is to dominate the market share. So they do need to cross the chasm. The discounting while noteworthy to make a good decision on, IMO is somewhat insignificant to the the steering of the Tesla brand in a 80-20 sense. There are and will be ways to make up for the revenue shortfall that’s posited. The core 20% IMO is culture, leadership, and manufacturing prowess. On the level of leadership, IMO EM needs to get clear on what Tesla is for. What SJ did great in his return to Apple was to get the company focused. Tesla has its fingers in so many things, as does EM himself. And all of the things seem to revolve or involve EM significantly. Some things got to give IMO. EM also needs to empower and allow leaders to emerge at every level to magnify the leadership push.

Nuclear energy is the answer, but never addressed. Hybrid is key. Carbon taxes don't help climate, it is a redistribution and money grab by the elite and politicians, and the political system is horrible. The people can do more. The political elite are terrible at marketing thank God.
@EximoMarketing8 ай бұрын
I’d suggest nuclear is part if the discussion rather than the answer. France is big on nuclear, Japan was but less so after Fukushima. It’s also an old technology and there may be better answers coming on tap now. I’d also disagree on taxes. The whole tax structure is built around driving behaviour. We tax things we see as socially unacceptable - alcohol and tobacco - to drive behaviour change. I don’t see why excessive carbon use shouldn’t be subject to the same standard

00:02 Interviewed Seth Godin as the final guest of 2023 and first guest of 2024. 02:11 Seth Godin talks about not having regrets and living in the present 06:19 Email as the enduring but problematic technology of the internet 08:27 Government's avoidance of understanding technology led to neglect of regulation for cryptocurrency. 13:04 Adding options increases sales 15:22 Marketing has shifted from reaching the masses to targeting specific audiences. 19:27 Focus on delighting the smallest audience by offering more value than they pay for, rather than engaging in a race to the bottom. 21:24 Electric car demand facing classic crossing of the chasm 25:26 Companies can benefit by going down the experience curve to lower production costs. 27:17 Climate solution requires serious action, not just feeling good 31:26 Individual actions may not be enough to solve big issues like climate change. 33:26 Small number of people have a large impact on climate change. 37:19 Marketers need to tell true stories that undo systems and make a change happen. 39:17 Seth's latest book, 'The Song of Significance', is about meaningful work and building a significant organization. 43:19 Smallest viable audience is the key to marketing success 45:11 Consistency and practice are the key to producing useful content.

Ritson is at a level of mktg that we need to aspire to. His early academic models are deigned to make you think. Totally agree with the 4p's, although very simple the concept needs a lot of study, application and continued study. In mktg our models are our tools, just like how a tradesman carries his tools, the mkter carries the concept of models. The beauty about mktg is the more models you learn and hack to your own enviroment the bigger/better the toolkit you have. Emmert Wolf wrote that "a man is only as good as his tools" this holds true for any trade including mktg. On another note... I'm wondering if bothism as a word is another take on gestalt psychology? That is , "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts"
@EximoMarketing Жыл бұрын
There’s a phrase which is, I think, “all models are wrong, but some are useful.”! But knowing that, and understanding how to apply them can make it much easier to be a marketer! As for the gestalt reference, it’s not something I know a huge amount about, but the way you explain it… yep!

As a Northern Irishman from Ards living in the US and in my second year working in marketing, this podcast was a dream. Having come to the states to play football in the NCAA system and now outside of my 9-5 at a Fortune 50 credit card provider working as the Head of Marketing for a soccer academy and leading paid social for a new professional team, every second of this podcast was either relatable or insightful for me. I’ve been following STATSports growth closely for the past 3-4 years and I’ve been waiting for the marketers to hop on a podcast together for me to consume. Excited to see the company’s continued development and thank you for making this podcast happen, Andi. Amazing content!

This is the most racist , divisive crap ever. Many are not buying the BLM narrative, anymore! What about the execution of two Black teenagers in the BLM movement inspired CHAZ section of Seattle? I would think everyone would be dropping BLM like a hot potato! BLM is clearly not about supporting Black lives.
