This is just my honest opinion. The Louisville & Nashville M-1's should've been classified or re-classified as "Cumberlands" instead, named after the Cumberland Plateau where the Louisville & Nashville rail line travels through ,also where the M-1s were used hauling heavier freight and Passenger trains.

I may only be in my early 20s, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy seeing these beautiful machines thundering down the track! The Pennsylvania Railroad is my favorite railroad of the past and seeing those mighty steamers in action makes me even more excited for the day when they finally get K4s #1361 back into service!

I would get this just for the Pittsburgh scenes. So much of the PRR is available but so little in Pittsburgh. The bridge the cameraman was on is still there, hasn't been replaced. The yard is now full of buildings and parking lots, and with just the main line the only piece of railroad left.

My wife and I were on this last Voyage, our 9th river trip on board. It was a bitter sweet moment for sure. One note, the bar was super stocked. The staff asked the Captain "what shall we do with all this inventory"? The Captain said "serve it"! And so they did! I never saw such drinks before or since. Life on board was like no other cruise any where. You have closets bigger than an F cabin on the DQ. No one complained. No one ever complained. That was life on board. We had Mary Greene's old cabin.. Cities waited for the Queen to arrive, every time. Such fanfare! The kitchen was about the size of a 1950 bedroom. From there 175 people were fed wonderful meals. I can't imagine how hard the crew worked so all of us could have such a good time. Her Whistle! I heard Captain Changary say " the Delta Queen has the prettiest whistle on the river. He had it sounded A LOT!

Kevin Michael Richardson: Mallet or "Articulated" locomotives came in two varieties. "Simple Articulated," meant that boiler supplied steam to two sets of equal sized cylinders. "Compound Articulateds" had larger sized cylinders in the front and small ones in back. The compound design to allowed hot steam straight from the boiler to power the regular sized rear cylinders. The steam expelled from these would then be sent to the largest front cylinders. Their extra size compensated for the reduced pressure of the second hand steam they utilize. Recycling the system had its benefits, but other drawbacks to the compound cylinder system the limited the locomotives' success. But simple articulateds like the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenys. And 4-8-8-4 Big Boys enjoyed productive careers hauling millions of tons of freight for up to 20 years. The 4-6-6-4 Challenger type engine number 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was reccomissioned and restored in 1981. And while number 3985 is currently being rebuilt. It's toured the country as a public relations ambassador, pulling excursion specials and occasionally working freight trains. Challengers were designed in the 30s as dual service locomotives to pull both passenger and freight trains. Over an 11 year period, 252 were built. The first of them and greatest number went to the Union Pacific, who reportedly named them after the challenging assignments they faced in Utah's wasatch mountains.

That time was the beginning of the end of the steam locomotives. From there, they still continued producing steam locomotives up until either the 1940s/early 1950s, & it wasn't until the 1960s when nearly all steam locomotives phased out & replaced by more diesel ones.

The live sound recordings and scenes are precious and I would recommend this DVD to anyone who loves SP steam. Only thing I can say about it in a negative way are how drawn out some of the chase scenes can feel. If you're into that though, this is for you.
@herronrailvideo11698 ай бұрын
The film is what it is. Most viewers like chase scenes and they are longer in the DVD. Most of the sound was recorded by the camera man and are original to the film. This preview is only a fraction of what you get on the DVD.

the world's biggest steam locomotive is the Pennsylvania Railroad S1 not the Big Boy
@carlenger97078 ай бұрын
In overall length, yes the S-1 was bigger. The tender was about 10 ft longer which made the overall length about 8 ft longer. In terms of just the locomotive, the big boy was bigger; it was wider, longer, and taller.

Wrong. It was recorded by the cameraman John M Prophet III when he shot the film. We matched up the film with his recordings. For more info on Mr. Prophet do a search. When you hear a Hudson or a Niagara, you are hearing actual locomotives.

Very impressive and enjoyable classic footage of the Reading rr operations during the transition era period, these were the final years of steam operations and it's great to see that these moments were recorded on film. The Reading rr t1 class 4-8-4 Northerns and the G class Pacifics were impressive examples of steam power to view in service as shown in these film recordings.
