Beautiful fish. Back in the winter of 1986 I dedicated myself to hunting sheephead and calico. My best was 30.1 and 30.5 lbs. I was freediving Deadmans reef in Laguna. I had my biggest one mounted. Did you eat yours? You have major bragging rights for that fish. Congrats!

it has to dry longer or you can wet sand it

Tank Diver here. Just starting to get into Free lung. I have been within touching distance of these beauties around Mission Bay, Cardiff By The Sea and Torrey Pines, while taking in the sights and snapping a pic or two. Ya got yourself a beauty. I know the video is older but nonetheless, beautiful. I have always wanted to get into harvesting for myself and sharing the meat, but a little serious event and operation that made me leave this life and come back (probably owed someone twenty bucks, hahaha) put me on the sidelines for a bit. Took me a year and a half to get back into fighting trim. I live in Sun City CA, Menifee Area. Thanks for posting this video brother. Enjoyed it and the music too.

i do but all i do is just roll back down. I never got another shot at it cause i crashed on a jump soon after and tweeked my bars and almost broke my ass bone

+Berlyn Davis dude this video is over 2 years old lol you bitching about this fish dying is old news.... ive heard it all! Ive been diving for 15yrs you think your the first person to complain that a big sheep head died....... RREALY! First off this was not an easy shot this fish was 18ft away swimming facing away from me dipping fast. NOT an EASY SHOT. Yeah sheep head that sit on a rock at the bottom are easy. SECOND. Ive seen atleast 4 more of these big sheep in that same location soooo if your gonna cry moan and bitch about 1 fish you need to stop diving if you do even dive..... ITS a fish get over it its part of the sport thats why there are records!!!!!!! Thirdly this fish was not put to waist my friend ate all the meat and i kept the skull. Finally that fish was not 50yrs old. try closer to 10yrs bud and if this was such and easy challenge id like to see you do it youve probably never even seen a large sheep head like this maybe a 10lb but not this big. GROW UP KID ITS PART OF THE SPORT!

Shooting a trophy sized sheephead freediving is extremely challenging. Shooting 10 pound fish is probably what you're thinking.

when you mean the triger mech and the line release catch? yes those you leave on unless you want to pop the pins out but its not necessary

Only ocean side its illegal to dive the east side but usually they dont care ive done it for lobster.

it all depends on how often you use your gun. I usually do it every 6 months or so. but i dive atleast once a week. if you start to see the gloss disapear from the gun. Or notice alot of scratches that are getting deep you might want to think of re-coating it

Hey red did you hear me calling out your name from the street , Tuesday morning, you looked like you heard me but couldn't see me. I should have ran to the little beach where I launch my kayak. I failed on a large halibut that morning. Shot too soon and missed. Viz was poor.
