Is TGTB a good curriculum to teach a child to read?
@HomeschoolwithRachel
@HomeschoolwithRachel 15 сағат бұрын
It’s good if the child has strong phonics skills. In the kindergarten curriculum it says in the teacher forward section the child needs to already know all letters and the sound they make. So yes it’s a great curriculum if they have the foundational knowledge! Two other choices that are reading programs that teach phonics skills are All About Reading and Treasures Hunt Reading. Both use the Orton-Gillingham Approach to reading which has solid evidence backing it up. Hope this all answered your question 😊

So I missed the part where there are videos. So B+R provides a list of video links to supplement each unit/lesson?
@HomeschoolwithRachel
@HomeschoolwithRachel 16 күн бұрын
For all the lessons in Wonders if the Earth and Sky there is a section labeled “For the Visual Learner” which has a few video links! They’re all from KZbin which make it really easy to use. We’re using Wonders of the Plant and Fungi Kingdoms this year, and so far there’s video links for every lesson so far.

Thanks for your question! I use tabs to organize. My organization tabs are titled learning, even days, odd days, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then the numbers 1-31 to represent all the days in a month. One verse will be in each tab as we methodically work our way through the verses. The only tabs with more than one verse are the numbered tabs since as my children master the verses they review them just once during the month. I hope that helps 💜

Thank you for sharing your experience. We just did Bookshark for Kindergarten, and the history read alouds made my sensitive boy anxious and too scared to sleep for a few weeks. So... I have been tempted to try something different like Beautiful Feet Books Around the World Part One since we are an half Asian family, and my home cooking is basically a fusion of all the Asian countries listed. But I wasn't pleased of the book recommendations for India in the sample. Does it get better for the other Asian countries? I got the first impression that the curriculum creator only wanted to suggest old classic books on those countries which were usually written by Westerners.
@HomeschoolwithRachel

Thanks for your kind comment. This curriculum is very Eurocentric and like you said many are from a Western perspective. If I had to do it over again, I would probably choose Build Your Library. I believe their level K is a similar Around the World curriculum but with different book choices. Hope you find something that works for your child!

Yes, I would definitely have to see and hear him to make the best recommendations since there are a few different things that could be impacting him. @HomeschoolwithRachel 3 ай бұрын
@@gingerdillard1664 I am not doing any video consultations, but I will give you some info on the three different options you have for speech therapy because it can be confusing. First is going through the school system because speech therapy is covered for homeschoolers through special education by creating an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This option is free and he would likely receive 1-2 sessions per week. Second is getting a doctor order for speech therapy and using your medical insurance to cover some of the cost for you. Third is finding a private practice speech therapist and paying out of pocket. Good luck and all the best on making progress!!!

Hello and thanks for your comment! It sounds like you are working closely with your speech therapist on exercises. I would keep up the work you’re doing because that R will likely come with continued treatment. I know it’s hard in the moment, but results will payoff in time. Stay encouraged and also ask your specific speech therapist for more activities for his specific R distortion since your speech therapist knows his distortion the best 😊 Good Luck!

Loved your curriculum picks and actually took the plunge on Dimensions PKA because of your reviews! It's fabulous!! Are you still loving it for your older son? I've heard several people talk about hitting a wall in grade 1 and switching to Math With Confidence or other conceptual programs in the same vein as Singapore and MWC, so I'm curious if you're pressing on with Dimensions or considering a switch!

Hi Emily! Thanks for your kind words. We are sticking with Singapore Dimensions for 2nd grade. We have a few lessons left in level 1B and it’s challenging but in a good way if that makes sense. The games really help him stay motivated because the workbook going from levels 1A to 1B was significantly more challenging. We are sticking with Singapore because it works for us but I am completely open to changing if we hit a wall 😊

I plan on using the same LA and math! my son actually sees a SLP twice a week and wondering what phonics you would recommend in addition to TGATB?
@HomeschoolwithRachel
@HomeschoolwithRachel 4 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for your comment! Depending on your specific child’s needs I would recommend 3 different programs. Explode the Code is workbook style, All About Reading has tons of research to back it up as it’s an Orton-Gillingham based approach, and then Treasure Hunt Reading has videos and a free workbook which you print online and follows the Orton-Gillingham approach. My now 1st grader needed extra support when he was a kindergartener and we used Treasure Hunt Reading for about 6 months until he was more confident in his phonics skills. These are 3 different programs but depending on what your child’s needs are hopefully one of these help supplement TGATB!

How did you end up liking Letters & Numbers? 😀
@HomeschoolwithRachel
@HomeschoolwithRachel 4 ай бұрын
It wasn’t our favorite unfortunately. We ended up skipping the Numbers section as it was too simplistic for my Pre-Kinder. We did like the Letters portion but it is very repetitive with the same/similar activities for each letter. It got the job done though because he knows all his letters and sounds and is beginning to string CVC words together. I would have picked a different curriculum if I had another Pre-Kinder because I wouldn’t want to teach from it again. I have a review of it on my channel if you’re interested 💙

Strongly Recommend Homeschool Languages. Unless they have a pretty decent vocabulary in Spanish and you have some Spanish Llamitas might be a little bit of a stretch. Llamitas focuses a lot more on "academic skills" reading, math skills etc. Homeschool Languages on the other hand is focused a lot more on building conversational skills and very very gently begins to introduce some of the grammar and pre reading skills. It's very kinesthetic and makes it all super fun. We're almost finished with Homeschool Languages Level 1 and my little girl has learned a lot. One of the great thing also about Homeschool languages is that the teacher guide is scripted in a way that you can implement if you don't know any Spanish at all. And it's pretty much open & go. I like the idea of Beautiful Mundo and have looked at it several times, but my problem is that it's just a little too unstructured and decision fatigue is real. LOL.
