Looking forward to version 7! While I can do euclidian rhythms natively in my day, I could see an option for euclidian in the arp. Not really a wish, but a mayyyyyybeee....

This is a genuine question... How do you see Euclidian rhythms fitting with ARP's workflow? I'm thinking... Rhythm Patterns, Binary Patterns and Time Divisions. ARP can create any of these Rhythms currently (I believe) but what would be the benefit of using an algorithmic generator?

Came for the technicals, stayed for the gentle video diary with emotional soundtrack. For some reason it reminded me of the piano scene near the end of The Enchanted Cottage (1945). Odd connection, but there it is. Glad that all is well.

Can the Midicake create its own melodies? So completely unexpected results? Or do individual notes have to be entered?
@midicakemidi
@midicakemidi 6 күн бұрын
Unlike a step sequencer or MIDI recorder, where you enter the exact notes, ARP generates melodies based on the notes/chords you chose. The sequences themselves are built by combining various parameters, each controlling a different aspect of the musical sequence. The possibilities are huge. ARP has a wealth of parameters and modulations that can be combined to create a virtually unlimited variety of melodies. It is generative but it's not random. You explore but you are in control. Take a look at some of our other videos to see how it works. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask. Contact us at midicake.com or on our forum.

I purchased an ARP recently and have struggled with understanding the details and subtleties of the Time parameter. This should have been the first video I watched about ARP. The Time parameter is really well presented here along with the other parameters/modulations that are Time related. Pretty amazing little box -- great video, thx!

I had to dig through the archives to find out. I used 3 instances of Massive for this in Ableton. Build from the following 3 presets (Gamma State, Cruithne's Orbit, Clean2Hiss). There's a fairly huge amount of reverb on each track. The drums are an 808.

Interesting device! But why does the displayed tempo keep changing from around 6:18 to 6:30 ?
@midicakemidi
@midicakemidi Ай бұрын
It's just a rounding issue... ARP is receiving MIDI Clock from Seqtrak and digital clock timing (particularly over USB) is notoriously prone to single-tick latency because it's at the mercy of microprocessors that are busy doing lots of other work. (I've talked about this in the past on our forum). It's too fast to detect in the audio with human ears. The latency is usually less than 1 millisecond. However, because ARP calculates the tempo based on the timing between the ticks, even tiny changes, in the gap between ticks, can result in different tempos being calculated for the display. For example, at 138bpm each clock tick is only 18ms apart, so a 1ms latency equates to a 5% variance. Even with ARP's smoothing algorithm, which samples the last n ticks, the issue is very apparent at certain tempo timings. You'll see this occur on many digital devices that detect tempo from an external clock. It's nothing to worry about as the tempo calculation is only for the display. ARP triggers its note output on the clock tick (not the calculated tempo), so if one tick is slightly late, the next will be on time and the music rolls on. I hope that answers your question and if anyone knows of a better solution to tempo detection I'd be very interested. :)

@@midicakemidi Thanks for the very detailed reply! That makes sense, I didn't realise at first that it was the seqtrak and not your ARP that was the midi clock source. I'm surprised there is so much jitter from the seqtrak as I would have thought a microcontroller based device like it would actually do much better than say a DAW running on an general purpose preemptive OS that is switching between hundreds of processes a second. Anyways thanks again for the quick reply 👍

I have just started my journey in learning to live perform. Two things I’ve learned. There are no rules. Have fun. I improvise as an alternative to structure that I have to deal with in my full time job and adulting. Noise made with our toys is one of the few things in life that truly moves me. I also do this for myself. Similar to I have to love and or fix myself.

Did you consider using the J-6 chord library ? Select a chords set, use the J-6 as a MIDI controller - easy feeding of chord progressions to the ARP with single touches on the J-6's "keyboard". But would that be redundant with what the ARP offers ? (I have no idea - ARP is on my 2024 Santa Claus letter...)
@midicakemidi
@midicakemidi Ай бұрын
@@liotier Cheers, It's a good suggestion. ARP is designed to work with any MIDI chord sequencer though its own chord engine is pretty powerful and versatile. We are working on enhancing ARP's internal chord chain sequencer too. I'll, perhaps, try to do a video on chord sequencing soon. The J-6 might feature. Thanks!

From my own point of view, recorded, music never feels the same when recorded as it did when performing it and this carries over to an audience, too. A recorded "live" performance can never sound the same as it did in the venue and this is not just mixing or acoustics or editing: personality, equipment quirks, the rest of the audience and more all play into the final experience. From this video evidence, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your improv skills - verging on 'Berlin School' at times. At one point you say that you find music improv and music production to be very different and I wonder if you are not bringing your "producer's ears" to your musician's practice... I can see how that would lead to self-doubt. An audience is there to listen (we hope) and they understand what they have come to hear and are prepared for whatever happens (well, mostly they are - I can never forgive the tw*t at a Barry Adamson gig recently who was calling loudly for the sacking of the person who'd set up Barry's microphone, which kept dropping in height: even Mr Adamson found it funny).

Interesting. But repeatability and a harmonic pattern are by no means definitive of what music can be. They describe what it usually is and how humans usually use it but in my experience there are more interesting sources of variability and creativity for exploring spontaneously arising patterns. This is seen by mind as just chaos but this is not a very interesting dialogue with sound. Repeatability is not a crucial criterion. Of course these are views and inspirations for different persons.
