A circular coil would cause the ball to be forced out one end. What crossing the wires over themselves in this way does is create multiple different angles where the magnetic force is applied.

well done I had a tentative idea that using the same method to launch Satellites or other kinds of things. However, it needs rigorous experiments and reliable mathematical formulas to verify conjectures. Thank you for providing the experiments.

it's a shame that you used the youtube video as the source for your demo. You tube sound has so much loss that you get fuzzy images or totally wrong images. If you use the Raw WAV original Source, you get very sharp clear images on the scope.
