You want to know the funniest part? Running a brute force search on an assorted list would still give Data the solution to a catastrophic warp core breach before Geordi even realized that there was a problem.

I always wonder what this show would have been if we hadn’t lost Christopher Evan Welch. Also TJ miller but he’s not dead.

At the Season 6 intro, near the end of the 1:02 mark, Instagram is right next to a building that has been torn down. That building is Barnes and Noble and was replaced by Amazon Books. Which is pretty funny, but kind of sad at the same time.

Actually not that bad if the searched element is small (at the first indeces) in most cases

The code is bad, but not because of brute force. This kind of search on sorted list is perfectly ok if you know the list will not hold many elements (or won't run too often). It's useless to implement sth like binary search for small lists. Gain of few milliseconds usually isn't worth reduced readability and increased probability of bugs. I just tried this in Java (which is not the fastest language :)) and even for ten million elements, brute force still takes less than 1 ms on my average PC. (Yes, it's about 600x slower than binary search for array of this size, but we are still talking about times less than 1 ms long, so the difference is negligible for a lot of practical applications.) Modern processors are FAST, so it's not necessary at all to (pre-)optimize everything. In fact, it should be avoided until/unless you know some part of code is a bottleneck and/or it's critical that it runs as fast as possible.

For me the joke is not using linear search, but not using sortedList.indexOf(element) instead of writing it yourself.

it's a shite box... no rack mounts.... ,no place for rack mounts... if that guy was any sort of designer he would have researched . rack mounting Plus on the opening scene , I think Richard forgot to plug his Keyboard in..... all that typing and nothings going on screen. They could have pulled from a text file , on a timer to type content.

Repent boomers! You were fed nonsense by the "golden generation"! GATEKEEPING IS NOBLE! GATEKEEPING IS EVERYTHING! Love your people, love your culture and gatekeep against foreign invaders. Boomers traded honour for socialism under the tutelage of "the golden generation" (top of the ponzi scheme). Pensions must go to zero. Public healthcare must end. Public education must end. Public transit must end. Socialism is pure evil. There's an ancient saying: TAKE WHAT YOU WANT; AND PAY! This is what happens to a people that drink the poisoned milk of socialism.
