I was 13. I remember the military being everywhere and the curfew, meals from the military and the Red Cross, and the fairgrounds being full of those FEMA campers, and the health department coming to everyone to administer Tetanus shots, dead animals everywhere and caskets floating out of the cemetery.

Its unbelievable to think that thing is just mangling human's to literal pieces while its approaching like that. Screw that shit, I got hit by an EF3 not long ago and just seeing a cloudy sky at night with a bit of wind freaks me out now. Cannot imagine living through one of the April 27th tornadoes.

As someone who was 18 years old on the MS gulf coast when this happened, it's so wild to watch this coverage from almost 20 years ago now. Really bringing back some feelings of what it was like to go through that...

It messed east tarboro up extremely badly. I moved there in 2001 and it was still water marks on some homes. Couldn't believe the tar river could get so high. I stayed on Grandville st right by the river next to princeville. Very sad

This was a man made flood, just to let everyone know..this could have been avoided.. the state was scared the damm,s further west was going to break so they opened what we call the flood gates and all hell broke loose.. eastern north Carolina got messed up because of it..storm was bad yes but the mistake was from some human decisions..NC should have gave every person who was affected a new home but it didn't happen because most didn't have insurance.. crazy

On this day I was working with my brother on a job in Pinson. We got rained out and went to the office, located in Westend. At home ws my wife and toddler, wife was pregnant with our second. Looking from the office toward our home I called my wife. The sky was as dark as I'd ever seen it. I told my wife to take our litle girl and go to the basement. While we were talking she said the lights just went out. I left the office and headed home. A fire truck passed me at college hills and sped away. I arrived at Cherry Avenue and exited from hiway 78. I had no idea what awaited in just a 14 mile. Nobody had stopped traffic from getting on Cherry. I found myself in the middle of where the storm had passed only 15 or so minutes before. With traffic backing up behind me I couldnt back up. Driving around debris and trees on the road All I could think about was to get home and see about my family. Finally I got to Daniel Payne Drive. There was a power line down across Cherry and I'd seen three cars drive over it, I knew it was dead but a cop pulled up and stopped me. I managed to turn around and head back. It took me over an hour to get back to 78. As I arrived home my brother, who had left the office after me was at our house, he was about to come looking for me, thinking I might have gotten caught in the tornado. It was a very bad day for the folks at Smithfield. Thankfully my family was safe. On a second note I had recently performed some work at a food plant in birmingham and knew a man who worked there, a very nice guy. In the opening of this video you will se the headline that a mother and child were killed. It was the nice guys wife and little girl. The mother had the kids, a girl and a boy, one on either side of her, holding them. The little boy survived.
