Hi Ang, as Italian I like some of the artists you have already listened to. (My favourite is Battiato), but ... if I have to be honest, the one that I prefer over anything else is ... classical composer Dmitri Shostakovich. He is considered one of the top 3 of the twentieth century. I discovered him by myself, when CD's appeared on the market in the eighties. I saw, that his Symphony nr. 13 (Concertgebouw Orchestra directed by Haitink) had full points. I decided to risk and bought it, and I was blown away. I know you cannot play it here, but ... listen to it, and enjoy it. It is a sort of classic metal :). If you like him ... his best symphonies are 13, 7, 8, 4, 10, 11, 14, 15. The most brutal is 8 (war symphony).

Dear Mad Dang. To clarify, Emma is now 16 years old from birth a stomach paralysis, gastroparesis. She cannot eat normally, but is connected to 2 pumps for her stomach and intestines 22 hours a day... She comes off these pumps a minute before her performance. And immediately after her performance she is linked to it again.... She is now back from a world tour with Andre Kok and his Johan Straus orchestra... This month she will perform 12 times again in the place of birth of Andre and herself and this for 12,500 people..... She also won a TV program Ministars outside the Voice Kids Netherlands with an amount of € 50,000 ... When she was asked what she was going to do with this money when she turned 18. she indicated that she would set up a foundation to support a study of her disease and other patients. She received the amount immediately, and within a month the foundation for gastroparesis was established. set up.

Interestingly, this performance was shown on Christmas Day, but although it sounds like a Christian song it actually has Jewish origins. The song, written by Leonard Cohen, is not a celebration at all, it's a lament about love and loss, but it also explores other themes, including faith, doubt, and praise. The Jewish-Canadian artist drew inspiration from a rare combination of Jewish scripture and gospel music.

This performance was actually from this past December (broadcast on Christmas Day actually), four months after she performed Voila. Emma is fifteen in this video, she turned sixteen this past March. She appears very young because her disease slowed her growth, she's very small for her age.

In 1987 Miles Davis, in Italy for work, accidentally heard a young Italian singer-songwriter, Adelmo Fornaciari aka Zucchero, on the radio; He immediately fell in love with the song he heard and decided to contact the artist to record a new version of Dune Mosse. Made in 1989, two years before Davis' death, the collaboration between Zucchero and Davis was only released in 2004 on the album "Zu & Co".

The scene of the elderly on the broom is taken from Vittorio De Sica's film Miracolo a Milano. The scene of this take-off, as reported by Giancarlo Giannini, inspired Steven Spielberg to play the scene of the kids on flying bicycles in the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It doesn't remind you of Harry Potter's Quidditch?

I will try to help some here. The title is pronounced like VWA LA. The orchestra is pronounced like the YO Honn Strauss orchestra. You need to watch the intro. It begins in Dutch but the rest is in English. She is a Dutch singer that speaks English better than this native born American. She learned French for his song, but not just how to sing the words, but she learned what each word means. This is how she can convey the proper feeling of the song. That conductor is watching her because she is the lead. She started before the orchestra came in. He is just there to make sure the orchestra stays in time with her. She sings many times where she sing half the song before the orchestra comes in. She is better than 99% of professional singers and she is just 15 years old here. Go watch that intro. Very important.

Roger Clutton has given you some pretty good pointers to Emma's history as a singer, and it's a stellar rise as a megastar, she has absolutely risen to the challenge of being a singer, and some, she's already so much beyond that level, What is not clear from any of the introductions by Andre, which you didn't get to see with the version of the video you used, Emma has suffered with her illness, gastroparesis, from birth, she was put on tube feeding at 9 Months, so she will have no memories of eating normally, which will have had so many other social implications in relation to sharing and similar activities that are a core part of life. She wasn’t properly diagnosed until she was 10, so her early years were not only a problem with people not understanding her using a trolley to move the pumps around, she was bullied and verbally abused, and the doctors didn’t understand her illness, and to make it worse, her growth was delayed, even now, she’s only 1Mt 50, and 50 Kg, and her stamina is not good, there are times when she has to use a wheelchair because of the issues of carrying the pumps, or even walking long distances, it’s been very hard for her, and she very much resents the awful limitations of being on the pumps for 22 hours a day, every day, her time off them is used whenever possible for singing, as that’s her therapy, her freedom, her escape from the awful regime that is her life every day, and to make it worse, she has to endure regular medical procedures to change her feeding tubes and to avoid any risk of damage to her voice, she refuses anaesthetic, which means at least 30 minutes of excruciating pain while the tubes are replaced, longer if there are problems, and she dreads this regular procedure. Another little known fact is that the video of this version of Voila was Emma’s first ever live performance of this version of the song, and her first ever performance on Andre’s stage, she’s performed on other stages, and for other events, but never as far as I am aware, for an audience of this size, 12,500 people, that’s the regular audience size that Andre attracts to his concerts, sometimes they are larger, it depends on the size of the venue that they are using. This performance was also special in another way, 12 months earlier, Emma released her first single, LAAT MIJ EEN VLINDER ZIJN , let me be a butterfly, kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJTbkqFvh5qmaqc the version on KZbin is in Dutch, with English words in the description, it is the story of Emma’s desperate desire to be free, to be able to escape the restrictions and confines of her disease, and soar like the butterfly that has just emerged from the cocoon where all the change happened, and to fly free, and there is a deeply emotional segment from 2:02 to 2:40 where she sings, ‘If only for a day, or even for a count of 10, I’d just like to live as another’, her desire to be able to escape, and as she sings it, her eyes close, she gently shakes her head, and then her head goes down, and she falls silent, as she contemplates the reality of her situation, and has to face the awful fact that for now, there is no escape, there can be no change, as there is no treatment or cure that can change the circumstances around her life, and then, she makes the decision, she will NOT be defined by her illness, she is going to fight it every inch of the way, and live as normal a life as is possible, and with that life changing decision made, her head comes up, and she rises to a new top note, and soars, like her butterfly of her dream. That first night on Andre’s stage, physically, she walked on to the stage, but mentally, she was already soaring like the butterfly of her dreams, Andre had worked his showman’s magic, she was no longer the good capable girl singer that had been winning Voice Kids kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGHKiZyhg7edmNE and Ministars, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qICuh35qpJKpnJY as she walked out on to that stage, in that stunning black dress, she was now the new Emma we are seeing more and more regularly, she came out on to that stage visibly and emotionally a beautiful, strong, powerful, serene, composed, competent, driven and dedicated young woman, Andre had seen that she was ready to make that difficult transition from the girl to the young woman, and that first night on Andre's stage was the start of the fulfilment of her dream that she'd sung so beautifully 12 months earlier, mentally, she soared like the butterfly, she dominated the stage, the orchestra and the huge audience with the strength of her performance, already, she is so much more than a singer that she dreamed of being, I don't have a word to describe how she performs in the way she does. As she punched the air in triumph at the end, as she sang that high note, the smile on her face said it all, she knew she’d absolutely nailed it, but even then, she hadn’t lost the 15 year old girl, as she threw her hands wide, and turned to Andre, the look on her face said it so clearly, ‘How was that?’ Andre’s eyes, his smile, the kiss and hug, the one word, ‘Fantastic’, they said it all, she’d very much nailed it, as Andre knew she would, and even though this was her first ever performance with him, he had the confidence the next day to invite her to join him in Malta for 2 concerts, to be a part of his Christmas concert series in Maastricht, and to be a guest singer on the 75 concerts that are the 2024 world tour. In September 2023, she was ‘honoured’ to perform at a special commemoration concert to remember the 8000 Americans who gave their lives to liberate Holland during WWII. There are 4 videos, an introduction, and 3 songs, and the first song, a Demi Levato cover of ‘Father’ is incredibly powerful, she absolutely destroyed the sound engineer behind her, he clearly wasn’t expecting her to sing with the power and emotion that she puts into the song. Roger Clutton has also linked more recent performances of these songs which are even more powerful, but these are a part of Emma's progression, so I won't change them liberation concert Introduction to the concert kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2arc5d-jZuVm9k Father kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2aYZXqpprJ7oJo Hero kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4q5dnyOrLOgipo You Raise me up, duet with Nico Wouterse, notable for the closing line by Emma, 'I will tell them, for as long as I can' kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJKrYX2HqLGiacU Two songs from her concerts with Andre, the first is a classic, ‘White Christmas’, she starts a capella, and then Andre builds everybody in, and even with 12,500 people there, as she starts you could have heard a pin drop. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIuoqpt9Z8d4m68 She also changed costumes and sang another song, ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnSlgImtbLV4qLc Since Christmas, she’s sung two special songs with Andre, the first is a song in German Ein Bisschen Frieden, she starts it with cheeky smile and a raised finger for quiet, and then a capella for the first verse, and after Andre builds every one else in, she sings a lovely counter harmony verse. kzbin.infoi-eX4AGKbIM Is the first part, a short, so when it starts the repeat, play part 2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3SQgqePl6yFpac She’s also been singing a powerful song, Michael Jackson’s song, ‘Heal the world’, and there was a special event in Athens recently, Emma sang Voila, and Andre then announced that he’s not been telling the truth, she wasn’t 15 as he’d said, that evening was her 16th Birthday, and the entire audience of 13,500 sang ‘Happy Birthday to her, and then as she went to start the next song, the audience went off script and sang a Greek version to her, before she sang the Michael Jackson song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV6ap5Zvf9d9nKc I will close with my normal appeal to everyone reading or listening to this channel. Emma's situation hasn't changed since that first appearance with Andre, she is still tied to her two external feeding pumps for 22 hours a day, and I know from recent social media posts, she finds that hard to cope with at times, despite that she's loving the singing with Andre. I make no apologies for adding this, Emma deserves all the support she can be given, as her foundation works to help find better treatments, or even possibly a cure for this awful disease. Emma's foundation is almost unique in terms of the work they are doing, there's been very little research into a devastating illness, the effects on the sufferers are huge. Emma's foundation can be found at gastrostars.nl Please, if at all possible, join me in making a (regular) contribution to her foundation, to enable them to help patients like Emma, and research this awful disease that has affected her from birth, and requires her to be tied to the pumps and feeding tubes since she was 9 MONTHS old, for 22 hours a day, hopefully, the work of her foundation will find a cure. One of their main people is a surgeon who has a lot of experience in dealing with gastroparesis, and she is not only a surgeon, but also suffers from the same disease herself, to the extent that as a result of her condition worsening, she's had to leave her role in the hospital, and she is now dedicated to the foundation, and working to help find possible new treatments, or even better the cure that will free people like Emma to live a more normal life, rather than be tied to the feeding pumps for so many hours every day. It will be so good if the work of Emma's foundation can lead to a better treatment, or even a cure, which will free her to do more singing, and it may be people here who make that possible.

In my opinion, you reacted to exactly the RIGHT video. I like that you had the english translation so you understood what she was singing. I also like that you were reacting simply to her talent and presence...without the backstory. Yes, the backstory is important in that it explains the emotional reactions of the audience, and I'm sure it will affect you, too. But, again in MY opinion, this wonderfully talented young woman/singer deserves to be judged on her own merit. She does not need the pity vote because of her condition. She's wonderful as is. Btw, I've seen other reactions by vocal coaches who did NOT see the long intro, who did not speak french, and who still fell apart watching her sing. While not a vocal coach, I did have voice lessons in my youth and sang in several languages. I watched this version of Voila, without the intro, and was totally blown away. At the end I was crying and leapt out of my desk chair and gave her a standing ovation. Then I started watching reaction videos and learned of her condition. I was glad I saw this version first. I love Emma's work without the backstory. Emma is a formidable talent in her own right.

Hey Mad Ang, thanks for this great reaction! Although it's great that you watched the English Lyric version, the meaning of her song choice is missed when you don't watch the original version, which includes her introduction (which is why the audience got so emotional). The conductor, Andre Rieu, explains that Emma has a rare disease called *gastroparesis* in which her stomach is paralyzed. She cannot eat food as it does not digest and makes her sick. She has two small, portable pumps that are connected by tubes to her stomach and intestine so she can receive nutrients throughout the day (she disconnects a few minutes before she performs onstage). Her disease also affects her growth rate, she is much more petite than other fifteen-year-olds. Emma has said multiple times in interviews that her disease has been emotionally challenging, she has been bullied and embarrassed in school many times. Emma sings songs that she feels an emotional connection with. Although she doesn't speak French she had a language teacher teach her how to sing the song phonetically. ...a few more Emma Kok performances: *HALLELUJAH* ( MAX KERSTCONCERT) kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6K5eYSrhbaompI *THE CLIMB* (Miley Cyrus) kzbin.info/www/bejne/moDLq596etp2eMk *YOU RAISE ME UP* (Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHq7c2qKl8qArNk *LAAT MIJ EEN VLINDER ZIJN (LET ME BE A BUTTERFLY)* kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKLCkGaPnrWYo68 This is a live performance from a music festival, Emma is singing her original song, it's about her wish to be free from her pumps and feeding tubes, to live like everyone else, if only for a few minutes (The video has English subtitles).

You mentioned training. Emma was musically trained in that she played violin from as soon as she could hold one. She plays piano too. Her brother is an elite violinist and her father has a senior role in comms and marketing with the South Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. She was brought up surrounded by music. If you want a real Emma treat....This was only Emma's 2nd serious performance with no formal singing lessons. It was a socially distanced and streamed concert organised by her 17 year old brother for the benefit of musicians and artists impacted by Covid back in 2020. Here Emma is introduced at time stamp 57:28, the video is the whole concert but the link should take you to the right place; a lovely moment with her father adjusting her microphone stand follows before she begins to sing 'Opportunity' by Sia then at 58:28. In my opinion I don't think it is possible to find a more competent or more moving performance by a 12 year old. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnOvnaKGaceEgqc P.S. at 1:33:05, you can see Emma playing violin, also her brother Enzo (17) on violin, with her sister Sophie (15) singing. There is plenty of Emma Kok out there but these are special in their own way Start with ‘Father’ below, it’s epic. 'Father' sung in The Hague at a memorial concert on 8th May 2024. Its powerful and emotional..... It's totally off the charts to be honest. Incredible! kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIm6c51tYsqXjbcsi=P5lxyjWuj9m97Nbo 'When You Believe' (A Whitney Houston / Mariah Carey cover) sung at the Freedom Concert in Amsterdam 5th May 2024; Emma is 16 here singing with April Darby. This was performed with the King and Queen of the Netherlands and Prime Minister and other dignitaries in the audience. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3ibiIlnfKunlcU 'You Raise Me Up' Another song in the series of performances around, education, liberation, commemoration and freedom that Emma has supported for the last 2 years. This performed at a church in Rhenen near the memorial site of the WWII Battle of Grebbeberg where approximately 800 lives were lost over 3 days in May 1940. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHq7c2qKl8qArNk 'Laat Mij Een Vlinder Zijn' (Let Me Be A Butterfly) was Emma's first single, at age 13. The butterfly metaphor was always important to Emma. It relates to her health condition and the constraints of her feeding pumps - wanting to break free from them, like a butterfly from its cocoon to fly, even if just for a moment..... There is an official promo video but this live performance at a music festival is great. Emma sings in her native Dutch but this video has English subtitles. Her interaction with the crowd and confidence on stage defies her age. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKLCkGaPnrWYo68
