I built the Consolette model in the 1970s. Living in NYC I was able to visit the Schober showroom in midtown and met the wonderful Jim Ramsey. All models had such a clean, vibrant sound that I fell in love. Quite outstanding for an analogue instrument. And by the way, the whomping pedal tones did make it through all the compression!

@@doctorpotchke Oh yes! Even the cabinet was a kit in the sense that all wooden parts were precut and sanded. I have absolutely no experience in woodworking but the instructions were very clear and the parts fit together perfectly.

Some great footage here. The antenna was constructed and trucked in from New Jersey by RCA in cooperation with the Port Authority. The rooftops of either tower were constructed with a hat truss in order to accommodate a massive antenna such as the one seen here. It was even modernized in 2000 to support HDTV signal transmission. Truly a beautiful piece engineering almost completely destroyed on September 11th, 2001. Did you shoot this footage?

Terry Preston was a stage name Ferlin Huskey invented before changing his name back and dropping the “e” out of our family name. He was one of the most talented performers of his era.

Not to criticize, but this is definitely going too fast. These acoustic batwings were recorded below 78, usually around 75 or so. There are some even as slow as 68rpm. The key to getting these right is trial and error by listening to the instruments and get them to where they sound correct. These acoustic records relied heavily on brass instruments, so just listen closely and slow the record so they sound humanly possible.

I'd listen to the vocals, instruments played too fast usually sound pretty normal but, like you can hear, the vocals sound like a child singing if its too fast.

This is a wonderful performance. There's nothing like it, not even Rosenthal's various Strauss-waltz compilations. Lhevinne's technique is so transcendent that it sounds like there's no technique being used at all! Lhevinne's waltz-caused rubato is a miracle, always exactly right and never too much or too little. His treatment of the filagree around the melodies is incredible- - always a kind of pianissimo in relation to the broad waltz melodies. I have never heard another pianist play the filagree so perfectly in a relational way--in relation to the melodies==sorry if I go on. People studying piano should have to listen to this every day of their conservatory life.
