I went to school in Kirkwall from ages 11 to 17 in the 80’s. I lived in halls during the week and went home at weekends. I remember the time fondly. Mostly . It was still high school in the 80’s ;)

In 2009, we sailed on the Rotterdam from New York to Rotterdam crossing the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Belfast. We saw several icebergs shortly after leaving St. John. We were the first trans Atlantic cruise to visit Liverpool in 40 years, and the old Rotterdam was docked when we pulled into the Rotterdam harbor. Very nice cruise

Officers on cargo ships are better. They don't need 50 officers on bridge to do the job!
@ivaylopetrov43346 жыл бұрын
Nikola sorry but cargo ships officers don't have few thousand human lives to be responsible for.
@nikoladub6 жыл бұрын
That has nothing to do with responsibilty but with knowledge and skills. Responsibility for 25 people or 5000 is the same. You can't say it is bigger or smaller responsibilty. If you think like that on board somebody will get hurt. Anyway it is a topic of much discusion and different views.
@Sean-zw7qd6 жыл бұрын
This is a typical answer from a ordinary cargo officer who clearly doesn't know what's going on. Researches have proven that you will lose situational awareness while doing all this on your own. I you will look at the statistics, most of the accidents happen on cargo ships. BTW i count 4 officers, an helmsman, lookout, pilot and a cadet. Wondering were u see the 42 remaining officers ;-)
@nikoladub6 жыл бұрын
I worked on both types of ships but i like more cargo ships. The jobs are very different and i am not talking about bridge watch only. You are right about situational awareness it is always better to have 2 more lookout's on bridge. It helps but Costa Concordia and Sea Diamond had more people on bridge and look what happened. Did anybody from officers do something? There are more cargo ships at sea then passenger ship. I know very good officers and masters on cruise ship. Even some Master's on cruise ships told me they would rather sail with cargo ship officer then officer who started their carrier on cruise ship.
@Sean-zw7qd6 жыл бұрын
If you read the investigation that was conducted after the disaster you will discover some vital things. One point was the huge lost of situational awareness. The officers focussed all to much on the actual situation instead of their specific duties. Another point that was found the lack of proper training and conducted drills. Indeed there are more cargo ships then cruise ships but i you look in proportions, most of the accidents happen on cargo ships.

I dont know if the Filippines receive a good wage at HAL. I know that the company I work for, the Filippines earn no more than 500 US$ a month. But must work 13 hours a day in the most dirty circumstances you can imagine (Cleaning fuel tanks etc.) As an officer I earn much more than 10 times than they do. And this is not correct.
@donkoh57386 жыл бұрын
TainoHans - thanks for that humbling assessment and comment... I'd have to fully concur. In certain industries especially, such as hospitality, or the cruise line, equally hard work - vital work - indeed sees Extreme inequalities in total pay, including benefits and perks, et al. In my view it's excessive exploitation of supply and demand forces of the labor market. In some cases even to obscene levels and is just not right. Corporate leadership needs to seriously be conscious of this and ponder it in more illuminated, modern light and then make the fundamental reforms proactively..
