Someone pls help. I gotta give my degu eyedrops and she just keeps jumping and running away. I know its not pleasant for her but it has to be done, is there a way i could hold her for the drops in a way she wont escape, but wont hurt her?
@cractus5137

There are techniques for this, I'm not too good at those myself, your vet should be able to explain them to you. If you can manage to hold her still long enough to wrap her in a towel, that may help. I always let my boyfriend give meds, he says to hold her as tightly as possible against you while her paws and the rest of her body are covered by your hand, only leave the head out. Giving them medication can be a pain in the ass and I wish you the best of luck!

My degus were so funny, they used to run and hide and play in sleeves of dressing gowns while you were them, be happy being carried in your pockets if big enough, and are plenty vocal to let you know how they feel. Super sweet creatures, but like all animals do your research before you commit to caring for them.

Are the little zoo bars flimsy???
@cractus5137
@cractus5137 2 жыл бұрын
I would say no, except I've got one degu girl who has unfortunately gotten hooked on biting the bars early on. After a year and a half of her pulling them in the same spot very often, one bar has come off on one side. We fixed it with the ladders that came with the cage which we weren't using, could just hook them on there as a new/double set of bars. I think this is an exception though, none of the other degus can get them to bend easily and we've been hanging heavy wooden platforms and such from them with no problem. The only thing that took getting used to in the beginning with this cage was that it's quite loud, things echo through the metal. Solved that with a cotton patch underneath the tube of the drinking bottle. Still, I would still say, best cage I've come across and then that color 😍 I hope this lengthy answer was somehow useful, I get a bit carried away advocating this cage 🤣

They're actually becoming illegal here from 2024. You're allowed to keep the ones you have already luckily. I kind of understand why it is. Most animals are worse off with most people. It's harsh but true. Good intentions and little resources/monitoring have sad consequences!

I wouldn't call them small! I wouldn't also call them easy to look after. They seem like a step up from Gerbils for sure. Where do you put them when cleaning them out? From what I have seen they are also another step up when it comes to gnawing things to bits 🤣.
@cractus5137
@cractus5137 2 жыл бұрын
Our gerbils definitely destroy more stuff than our degus do! They're not easy care pets, but then again, most pets require much more than a pet store for instance tells you. I meant the small part in that way - when an uninformed parent goes to the pet store with their excited kid, like when they go to buy a rabbit or something - people will really think that a pet that's small (compared to a dog) and fluffy simply cant need all that much. Well, they do. When I clean them out, they roam free in the room. For dialy spot cleaning, they're often just in the cage. Since it has two levels, they can choose if they want to stay and watch or not.
@SlotCar2021
@SlotCar2021 2 жыл бұрын
@@cractus5137 Yeah they sure do take a lot of looking after. I have never let my gerbils free roam because they are mental and can jump out of a play pen so just play with them in the cage and they use their wheel. I always had hamsters but decided to get gerbils over lockdown and they are so much fun to play with. Had to make a metal wheel as they ate the wooden one!
@ShadowNinetales
@ShadowNinetales 2 жыл бұрын
@@SlotCar2021 Gerbils are such adorable little weirdos lol. My boys have the bathtub as their playground full of fun things once a week or so, and they are fond of trying to get on top of their wheel or up the sides of the tub, despite there being nothing of interest for them up there, visibly trying to figure out what they can climb on nearby to help them reach, then not even coming close to making the following dramatic leap. 😂 And they don't seem able to learn what can and can't be dug through, months after getting them they'll still ineffectually 'play the bongos' on their solid cage base for minutes on end, but it does make a pleasant little scrabbly sound that's nice to fall asleep to.

That was nice, and accurate - I have 16 of them after a couple of family planning mishaps, and now I'm living up to my responsibility as an almost full-time degu dad! Love them to bits! So, I have 8 girls, 4 each from two different mothers in two cages, and 8 boys in 4 cages containing 4, 2, 1 and 1. The 1s are brothers that starting fighting after a couple of years and can't be together anymore :-( so I had to make yet another cage for him, 100x50x50... I made a communal play area for them all full of bedding, driftwood branches, a large sand pit and large wheel, and throw in a few peanuts, pumpkin seeds and other things for them to forage..... Worst nightmare is them all getting out at once and separating them back into their cages again, but fortunately that's never happened on a large scale! Love em to bits though, and they all have great personalities, and all different... I may choose a pair to make another litter after the older ones pass, but thankfully that's still likely a few years away!

The molted degus are fairly new in Virginia. The blues rate 2nd in hard to find. The normal degu is brownish agouti. The problem I have is finding a wheel they can't chew up. Metal wheels should only be used if it's a fine mesh. Too fine, the nails hang. Too coarse, they get bumble foot. Mine eat better on lab block than pellets. Timothy hay is constantly put in the cage. I also have a cooling rock/pee pad they like to sit on.

I have kept degus for about 12 years & they are fantastic pets but need a lot of care & attention. I have 5 at the moment 3 girls & 2 boys (kept apart!) We got them when my son was 11 & he's 22 now. I think they are NOT good for younger children as their diet needs regulation as they do not tolerate sugar & any sugarier snacks a young child might slip them could kill them. We made it a bit of a project with my son checking out any foods & what they contained. We also made his bedroom degu proof so they can have the whole room to play in. My son is at Uni now so they are my project now!
