awesome love akumal we go their every year and snorkeling is incredible I made a video myself where did you see the lion fish? and was this only in akumal bay
@micahcreatesmagic4 жыл бұрын
also were you only snorkeling or diving
@jimwalling22004 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! This was all in Akumal bay and only snorkeling, no diving. The lionfish was out in front of Secrets and in a deep spot, I had the camera on a selfie stick and did my best to reach as far down as possible.

Jim Walling Nice I loved your video thanks for the information we’re going there to snorkel again this year I will be sure to look in front of secrets we don’t usually snorkel in front of there

Was this public snorkel or the paid tour snorkel?
@jimwalling22005 жыл бұрын
I just went out by myself every day, no tours.
@jimwalling22005 жыл бұрын
We were staying there so didn't do a tour, just went for a swim every day. I got harassed once by a tour guy because I wasn't wearing a life vest but just swam away. They can be aggressive.

Hi Jim we are going there in a couple months. We were thinking about doing the night snorkel. Did you enjoy it? Was it worth doing? I'm assuming you didn't have much footage because of holding the camera and flashlight at the same time isn't easy.
@jimwalling22006 жыл бұрын
I've never done a night snorkel so it was fun to try but we didn't see much. I think the money is be better spent going in the day.
@MsScorpio11216 жыл бұрын
Beautiful! I was trying to name the fish before you did. How far out did you go?
@jimwalling22006 жыл бұрын
I went out just about to the breaker. It gets shallow so you have to stick to the channels. My first year I had some uncomfortable moments where the swells took me perilously close to the coral but the second year I learned to avoid the shallowest parts. I loved snorkeling in this bay, so much variety of sea life.

We were headed to Akumal to snorkel but a local convinced us to go to Yal Ku Lagoon instead. It was a gorgeous place to snorkel and I definitely don't regret it. BUT I do want to go back and snorkel Akumal Bay since there are no turtles in Yal Ku Lagoon. Swimming with a sea turtle is a bucket list item of mine!

Sir, what camera did you use to film? Was the right off Secrets beach or did you have to go more to the “Tourist” Bay>. Thanks
@jimwalling22006 жыл бұрын
Hero 5 black. This was from all over the bay. We stayed at ABBWR so I would start there and go all over. That was before all of the buoys were put in place.

We used to snorkel there quite often. Some the best snorkeling ever! We saw so much variety. I think there is a charge now, used to be free. Thanks for the awesome video!

Great video, I was also at the Iberostar earlier in the year an snorkeled the same reefs. Can I ask what your settings were on your camera? My videos didn't come out near as good. Filters? Protune? Editor color correction? Thanks! I'm going back next month!
@jimwalling22006 жыл бұрын
I used two cameras, a Gopro 5 black and Olympus TG4. For the Gopro I used the snorkel filter and the Olympus on the Underwater setting. No color correction in post.

Thanks for answering! I have a hero4 and just bought a snorkel filter. Hopefully I'll get some good clips! The count down begins, going in 3 weeks. LoL

Nice video! Looking for a resort experience for the wife but I want the adventure of snorkeling/diving. We've been to Bonaire twice and I snorkeled non-stop both times. SO, I want to know if Akumal or Cozumel can hold a candle to Bonaire? Current thinking is to snorkel the best of Cozumel and begin the next phase of diving in Cozumel. Comments, suggestions welcome!
@jimwalling22005 жыл бұрын
Haven't been to Bonaire so I can't comment on the comparison. I'm in the same boat, the wife like to be pampered but I'm all about the snorkeling. This place won't disappoint, the bay is amazing. Where in Bonaire did you go?

Hi Jim, fantastic video and well filmed (the music works so well!) I really enjoyed it, especially seeing the variety of marine life in the shallow water. It was great seeing the eel venture out from its hiding spot. Did you do any scuba diving whilst you were there? which one was the best site? Thanks for sharing this video! if you have time, please check out my freediving c hannel, I dive in Australia, showcasing the local marine life there
@jimwalling22006 жыл бұрын
Thanks Manny! I didn't do any scuba diving this trip, last time I tried it ended with a visit to the doctor for an ear problem. You've made some great videos, freediving looks like a blast.

Your video was awesome! Thanks for posting. What part of the bay was it filmed in? We stayed at Secret's Akumal last year and are looking into going back this year. Saw some cool stuff last year, but trying to figure out the best spot for snorkeling.
@jimwalling22007 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I went all over the bay, each area has it's charm. The porcupine fish and octopus were spotted in front of the big thatched roof restaurant at ABBWR so make sure you go over there, but save that for a calm day.

Great video. Where would you say the best reef snorkeling was in the bay? In front of hotel buildings or way other end of bay by little food hut??? Going May 5th.
@jimwalling22008 жыл бұрын
+kmattorney Thanks! My snorkeling was cut short by an ear problem so I didn't spend as much time exploring as I wanted but for me the best snorkeling was down in front of the Secrets Resort and by the canons. The doctor who treated me said Yal ku Lagoon is amazing, you can walk to town and rent a golf cart to get there. We're going back in November and will be checking that out.
@michelleewillford8 жыл бұрын
Really nice video. We were there last November and saw the tip of a shark-watched it from way down north to south of the buffet palapa. Only difference is it was early morning and dead calm, flat water.
@jimwalling22008 жыл бұрын
+michelle willford I saw this one south of bldg 4 and not that far out. We're going back again this year. :)
@michelleewillford8 жыл бұрын
We've seen a nurse shark on the bottom out by the reef cut, a few years ago. And then the tip of the one swimming in the bay last year. Hopefully it's not bull sharks, but smaller reef sharks.
