If you want to get the freshest fruits and veggies at the best price, follow those old folks after they finish playing in the morning, as they will be heading to the local markets with the best deals (some of those markets are only available for a few hours for the morning senior crowds), there you can often find real Chinese farmers with their freshly harvested home-grown produce, and lots of authentic local breakfast items (ready to eat) at extremely affordable prices. Do keep in mind those markets can be quite crowded.

There's definitely some cultural shock when you visit a country with completely different culture and political system.
