4,000 black (and largely segregated) US Army soldiers were very instrumental in building the Alcan Highway. Their efforts and contributions have largely been ignored.

Those were tough guys, who helps build America. Can’t imagine the millennials or Emos doing something like that.

I'm envious of the people who have shaped the world around us. Even here in the UK we saw massive change post-WW2 that included a power generation network, a motorway network etc. I was too young to help forge these massive important projects and wish I'd been born sooner.

I've driven the Alcan a dozen times from one end to the other and not once was I not in awe of the men that built that highway. Amazing historic footage. Thank you for sharing it.

Sorry, we don't actually have much knowledge of the project readily available. This footage was found and digitized as part of our deep dive into the company history for our 100 year anniversary this year.

I could help a little bit with that. When I drove to Alaska in the early 70's I was in one rut for a hundred miles... Avoid that one. A steel basket over the windshield is a good idea to keep the baseball sized rocks coming at ya from piling up on your lap. Wolverines may try to stop you during your approach but you will win the battle lest your radiator gets punctured. Before you let the dog out of the vehicle check for sow bears with cubs in the vicinity. I hope you have an enjoyable trip as did I. The guiding camp cook job fell through cuz Ernie had a transmission fall on him. The 160 acre homestead tracts we were after became unavailable because the Alaska Pipeline went through and so job corps trained me up to go operate equipment for a few years. Land got too expensive real quick so I bought 40 acres in Idaho on a mountain for $11,000 cash. Here I sit homebound with 5-6' of snow fallen this season and the 2 1/2 mile long road is closed, possibly till spring. Doing great and enjoyed the video and memories of my travels. Thanks

Familiar scenes. I have traversed the highway 24 times since 09. That cut into the mountain along Muncho lake is still tricky. Thanks for the film.

Amazing what they did in those days with the equipment they had and the time frame, it would be impossible to do the same these days, protesters, native, lobbiests, government, media, in Canada nothing gets done anymore.

yes, I agree with you. the Kinder-Morgan pipeline is a perfect example or the repair work to the Coquihalla flood areas of what you speak of. this country still has no 4-lane coast-to-coast limited access highway yet either. speaking from Saskatchewan, BTW.

Great men and woman. Recognize alot of places for sure. Sad as 1 year it was built,in 1942,now one beaver wash out a d sikanni bridge burned, will take 6 months to get up and running. Today's politics, environmentalists, nothing will get done.
