Hi Mike....I bought a 82 westfalia too, that I'm doing the subaru swap, I have mostly everything at this point I bought the small car kit. You have a perfect van..I have a couple questions my engine lead won't close because the high of troatle body any suggestions...,??. Also I really like those rims can you give me some clues how to get a set...thank you..Manuel.
@VanagonGeek3 күн бұрын
Thanks’ 🙏 I’m not sure about the engine lid issue, my clears just fine. It could be that the small car kit cradles the engine a little higher? I’d call them. My rims are the Rhein wheels, 15”. They are becoming hard to find but I searched for a while a found this set.

Talk about some beautiful spots there. My favourite camping on my own is quiet, & away from people. If with the wife anywhere with a flushing toilet, & a hot shower.

Thanks so much for sharing. I got a free 85 brown Vanagon basket case a few years with rust and rot along the entire windshield sill and both front footwells but didn't have a title for it. I finally got one even without all the VT hoops to jump through. Then just last week I cannot believe for only $650 found a far nicer and basically complete and HANDSOME 86 silver machine with the square headlights and a clean title. SCORE! I very much hope to follow in your footsteps perhaps next summer with such an awesome copilot. SUBSCRIBED living vicariously until then.....

Thanks for the follow! My van was basically a shell when I bought it and I built it up over time. It’s taken 7+ years to get it where it is, but I love it! Hang in there and love your van, and it will love you back. 😉

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and let us have a peak into your rig. You can tell that you’ve spend a lot of time with it. A quick question: I have the opportunity to buy a 1986 Westfalia with a 2.1 l petrol engine and was wondering why you prefer the diesel over the petrol…reliability?

Thanks for the vid, great van. I’m thinking of doing the diesel heater with fuel tank in the same spot. Would you mind dropping a link to the tank you’re using. I assume you used the same tank fittings n parts the heater came with?
@VanagonGeek7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was able to do the whole install with what the 5kw came with although I opted for a fuel tank what was short and long as opposed to the tall skinny version.

Very nice Vanagon. I bought an ‘86 Weekender with a Bostig Ford engine. I wish i have the time and knowledge to do suspension replacements such as bushings or adding diesel heater.
@VanagonGeek7 ай бұрын
Thanks you! Suspension isn’t too difficult unless you’re adding lift springs and then it become more challenging. Bushings themselves are easy once the springs are out. The diesel heater is pretty simple as well, just plumbing and wiring, but finding a good spot takes some time.

@metalcloakmike7 ай бұрын
Sorry, I didn’t have my glasses on. 😊. No, I find it oddly comfortable to be honest. We’ve done multiple trips where I was in the seat for 6-8hrs at a time and no problem. A fancy recarro would probably feel better but these seats do just fine and I don’t feel like I’m too big in there.

Great build! I've been sitting on my Grandpa's 84.5" full camper for a while now. Trying to get the money together to give it a new life. He bought his in Germany and took it all over Europe, North Africa before bringing it home to Mill Valley. Then he took it all over North America. Definitely planning to steal some ideas from you 🙂

Awesome van! I live in California as well and I just got a 1982 Diesel westy. How did you go about the registration process for your van? Did you have to drive your car to the DMV for registration papers etc even though it’s smogged exempt in California ? Thanks!

It was a simple reg being that it was already reg’d in CA. I’ve never had any issues. 🤷♂️

@@VanagonGeek well that’s good! Did you have to drive the car to the dmv to register it ? Since it’s smogged exempt, did they need to see that it was in fact a diesel or do you just send paper in?
