"Two societies, one black, one white-separate and unequal." It was true in 1968. It's still true in 2024. I wish we didn't have to repeat the mistakes of history.

It's not white people's obligation to stay in declining neighborhoods to fund everything for another community. Blacks could have and did receive the va loans but majority of black military members never went to their state to apply. The same places that are hurting financially and with violence were once good areas when they were majority white so when black people took over it should have been a cake walk to keep the cities up and running and maintained. Banks have a system for loan applications for a reason.. why would you loan money to have it spent on a failing area

Detroit is perhaps the coolest American City. It has a well laid out downtown with iconic Woodward enveloping Campus Martius Park with music in the air, right downtown, surrounded by a free monorail, very green too. Bundle this in with Strait and the boats and the ever present sound of Motown in the back ground there is nothing else like it. Perhaps most of all Dtwah has captured the imagination, why we still talk about it so much.

This video is a great companion source when discussing a wide variety of historical phenomena that happen in Manhattan. I have been able to use this to provide historical context when discussing German immigration and the existence of Little Germany in the mid 1800s.

Dont get me wrong, it's beautiful cathedral but lack of pointy towers take away much of appeal and amd make it less gothic, then it could be. For ne these flat towers look dystopian.

Being a Michigan native descendant, it needs to be made clearer that the majority of the White Pine was located in Central Michigan. Detroit was not, and is NOT the entire state. When Michigan became a state, it sold off the pine forests for much needed revenue for operations. The White Pine and well as Oak was sent down to Grand Rapids for processing into lumber that was sent out for construction during the western expansion. The rest was used in the manufacturing of furniture. After the land was scalped of the trees, it was transformed into agricultural use by settlers from Ohio and parts of Europe. Many of these Setters were Free Blacks and mixed race people. You may be interested in further details of this story that can be found in THE MECOSTA-MORTON VIDEO TOUR and A NATION WITHIN ITSELF, which is also on KZbin.

Racism and politics are what ruined Detroit. In 1980 there was still 1.2 million people. Loss of jobs, cutting education funding, allowing dryg traffic and every devilish device imaginable once the city became majority black. Even white flight was spurred intentionally. Whites were frightened into selling their homes by banks and block busting realtors looking to make a profit by overcharging blacks for the homes that whites vacated. Then the whites were able to get low interest loans for brand new homes in the suburbs. Since banks would write loans in Detroit and blacks couldn't move to the burbs, many were left to buy on land contract.
