Most definitely, Con! lol. Very clever those lyrics. I remember my Mum telling me a similar story about my grandad (my Dad’s dad) and his horse and cart and it used to take him home to Limehouse from the pub when he was a bit “worse for wear” Lol. According to the Census records that I have, his occupation was a Coal-meter, an official who measured coal in the docks, so not sure what the horse and cart was for. Maybe just his normal mode of transport to and from work etc as it was around C1900. Love reading about that stuff x
@ConMaloney5 күн бұрын
@ heard of a gas and electric meter but not coal! Sounds like Grsndad was ‘metering’ off some coal for himself and flogging it from his cart. That’s how folk survived in those days 😉
@cheekyllamacreations5 күн бұрын
@@ConMaloney I’d never heard of it myself until I got the Census. Yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was doing something like that, he was very poor. He even lived in a workhouse at one stage. I have his Admission and Discharge record.

Very relatable descriptive written work to anyone who loves local history, and the never in a million years happenings that we sometimes encounter, very enjoyable especially for this time of year, well done a fitting tribute to the memory of a beloved friend, a collection of stories to follow might. be expected perhaps?

Wow I enjoyed that. I used to live in the area 2002-2017 and have often lamented missing the pre-Canary Wharf development. I have driven and cycled the Isle beaucoup fois and researched many a photo. A lot of those locations are here. What an extraordinary piece of editing taking something from 1989 and matching it to something more recent. I salute the effort and time spent and thank yo so much for it. I will be revisiting this video many a time. I suspect I will not be alone. Many thanks for posting - a important piece of historical record. KP

Thanks again! If you use Facebook, I recommend our site ‘The Isle of Dogs - Then & Now’, run by Peter, Mick Lemmerman (aka FreddieFootunnel on here) and myself. We’ve covered most, if not all, of the old Island on there, including more archive film. All the best, Con.

Terrif footage. What would make this even better would be the occasional location hint like a street name. Lived in Poplar 2002-2017 and spent much time on the Isle. Remarkable changes even whilst I was there. Between 1989 and 2002 clearly there was even more!. Managed to Google Map episode 1 after recognising name Cotton St (Robin Hood Gardens now gone). Not managed to do the same with this second episode. Very enjoyable watch and I am so glad you had the foresight(and equipment) at the time to do these recordings - they are gems that future generations will spill over. KP

Thanks for your positive feedback. There's another version of the same footage on this channel with narration by Peter Wright. He includes the street names and places. Hope that helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaXClZ6cm6l_f8ksi=RR4Nokix3MRcxvwr

So interesting! I've got a photo I took of Tobago Street when I was at art college from maybe 1998 and I always wondered what it looked like now. I have to say I miss the old London, although I was only 15 when the first video was made.

Thanks, Tom! Tobago Street was one of the first three residential streets on the Island. Originally called Cross Street, it connected Robert and Alfred Streets, later renamed Cuba and Manilla Streets.
