Thank you for your insight, Sir. So to sum it up: create a media presence to attract attention, cater to white belts first, colored belts second, buy club gear such as rashguards and uniforms, give discounts to students if they bring a friend, organize social get togethers, such as barbecues and watching fights, keep improving your own jiujitsu, teach kids, have someone teach striking at your gym. Did I miss anything, Sir?

I'm 39 and a 3 stripe white belt. only found BJJ recently but I'm in love man. its the only thing i don't ever dread doing, and working JJ is a joy, i'd do it all day if i could. teaching and eventually having "my own" training space has crossed my mind many times. my biggest ? is, am i too old? is it too late? I feel the answer is yes, so maybe the path forward is to find a good partner / team mate with whom i can go on that teaching journey. your thoughts?
@darkhorsemartialarts10 күн бұрын
The answer is by no means Yes, you can definitely build your way up to running and owning your own club. Theres a bunch of factors but a big one is, how hard are you willing to work to make it happen. If its a goal, write it down, find the steps to make it happen, and go after it. Ive known people that started their clubs in their early to late 60's. All too often our doubt is our worst enemy, get after it if its something you want!

Man that's great to hear, and what a view!!! I've worked my ass off for 2 on-profit gyms and 2 businesses. Spent over 6 years as a brown belt, because I sacrificed all my focus to the gyms, instead of going for seminars for a chance for a promotion. Now that I'm a 10P/BJJ black belt, I'm kinda happy that I didn't get promoted somewhere else and took my time. What I've learned is that if I want to make a living with jiu-jitsu, I need to either start selling private classes like crazy (which is basically impossible as people generally don't understand the value of them) or I need to start my own gym. Past year I've loved life, just focusing on coaching at my non-profit gym. Started a day job again yesterday and I'm already miserable. Gotta figure out a way to make enough money to open my own thing. My current gym will probably never have to funds to hire me as a coach, so I have to shift the focus away from them, which is super sad.
@darkhorsemartialarts12 күн бұрын
@@SoulRollerFIN it’s a lot of work but worth it. That’s quite a bit you have on your plate. Honing in the focus on what you really want out of everything might help 🤙
@SoulRollerFIN11 күн бұрын
@@darkhorsemartialarts Yeah. I mean I've built up basically 2 non-profits and 2 businesses. After leaving them they shut down or at least turned to something worse. Their loss. Currently just coaching at one non-profit and working a day job. I'm saving enough money to start my own. Screw "real work". I've made a decent living off jiu -jitsu and coaching weightlifting prior to the big C that happened in 2020. I can do that again. It's all about getting the funding to start off right.

That's a cool story, and congrats on the success. I am a Blue Belt and live in a tiny town in The Black Hills of South Dakota.
