As the Chief Mate on USNS Southern Cross we used Port Lyttleton as our staging base for that season's two resupply voyages to McMurdo Station & Scott Base Antarctica. A couple of wonderful evenings pub-crawling the Port Lyttleton followed by challenging the fiercest seas on Earth. I envy this family, but I wouldn't exchange experiences with them for all the wealth of the world. You do not know what you're made of until you stand bridge watch from midnight to 0400 "headed to the ice" in 65°S latitude.

❤ I made it to Samburu last month. Save the 🐘🐘 base is there too. I flew to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary 🐘 ( a 15-minute flight). So very beautiful ❤ These gorgeous intelligent creatures emotional. Forgiving, resilient 😢 They all have extraordinary stories. Brave sweet babies. Amazing work. I foster Long'uro and Lomenyak ❤ They are age 4 now.
