It definitely is a big deal to many people. Once China has access to a platform/market, that platform will be flooded with chinese shops. In China, so many people will do the same to make money. I've seen this happen with tiktok shop too. It's hurting small American businesses. In China, these companies can mass produce custom tumblers and sell for way less than an American small business can. For instance, chinese shops on tiktok that sell custom designed tumblers will charge $10 while an American small business will sell for over $20. Tiktok shop was exclusive to the US only at one point. Chinese businesses paid American business owner to use their shop. Even if they couldn't take payments through the platform from customers, they were getting the traffic they wanted, so it was worth it. Once China was able to get TikTok shop, everything changed...most of the shops and goods are now from China. Therefore, this will definitely impact and hurt the sales of American small businesses on Etsy. I have seen them also copy sales ideas from Western shops and do the same. Copy designs and reproduce. We (very small businesses in America) cannot compete with the prices from China, unfortunately, so once they are in the market, the market will change, many Chinese shops will lead, and negatively impact US small businesses. Think about how much it costs them for materials and labor compared to our costs. We just can't compete with them. Even though it's international shipping, they are still able to provide free shipping. The only competitive advantage we have is that our shipping speed will be faster than theirs. Etsy is a platform where small businesses can share and advertise their goods and services, and people are able to support these local small businesses with this platform. Once China sellers have access to it, there will be less support for the small local businesses because the Chinese shop's products will take up the marketplace. I don't see why it's necessary to include China when they already have access to tons of other e-commerce platforms, and they also have many of their own marketplaces. They are trying to make money from a Americans and are always trying to figure out ways how to do this. I personally know people such ad suppliers and have friends in China that are always trying to figure out how to sell to Americans lol. Our currency is higher than theirs. Our dollar goes longer there as well.

@KaraBuntinTutorials I'm not sure how your response is relevant to my comment? I'm explaining why people would freak out. I haven't heard of anyone freaking out, but I'm explaining the probable cause. They're able to produce items at lower costs and provide lower cost to consumer that can negatively impact the sales of small businesses in America because Americans cannot compete and provide the goods for the same prices or competitive prices. China will sell custom tumblers for half the price that a small American small business can sell for. That has nothing to do with bad actors.
@KaraBuntinTutorials

My point is that the video addresses the fact that there were Chinese shops on Etsy int he past that were selling handmade goods, and that's what's being opened up again. This isn't about the mass-market sellers because they've always been on Etsy even with the payment processing taken away because they have the resources to get around that. The idea that Etsy opening up to Chinese sellers will end up flooding the marketplace with cheap mass market junk that handmade sellers can't compete with is moot, because they've never left the platform. This video was about bad actors.

Thank you for the video 😀 I have a KZbin channel with crochet tutorials (to help drive traffic to my Etsy shop) and I've been showing people a particular technique using one of my items as an example and at the beginning of the video I say "If you would like to have a go at making this item, you'll find the link to the pattern in the description below", but I always feel it's a bit spammy and I might be losing viewers as they are there to see the teqnique not my ads. Do you think I would be better off doing some shorts (showing my makes with the links) along side my existing videos ? Or is this type of blatant advertising a bad idea ?
@KaraBuntinTutorials
@KaraBuntinTutorials 6 күн бұрын
No, it's not a bad idea, and doing shorts won't necessarily help. If that's all you're saying that's not spammy at all. A lot of people take the first two minutes of their videos to talk about nothing other than subscribing and liking the video and where to go buy their stuff, so if all you're doing ie mentioning the link that's nothing compared to what you could be doing!

Hi Kara! I design luxury wreaths. I do a lot of custom designs. Some designs are totally based on what a customer’s request and may not be anything like something I have designed before. How can I comply to these guidelines as a result? I don’t start custom wreaths without payment first. Using a photo of another wreath would actually be a misrepresentation of what they are going to get. The “stock photo” that I have is one that I generated on my own just to note that it is a Custom Order with my logo. What are your thoughts? TIA.

The problem (as I've discovered) with setting your shop currency to say GBP if you're in the UK but selling in the US is that the USD price the US shopper sees will fluctuate according to the FX rate. In other words, it seems to be difficult to control how your prices appear to a US customer if your shop currency is not USD. The price of fixing that seems to be 2.5% unfortunately, or a possibly setting up a foreign currency bank account. Unless anyone knows different?
@KaraBuntinTutorials
@KaraBuntinTutorials 9 күн бұрын
You're right, but I would keep the 2.5% and let the prices display the way they will. You get hit with so many other fees on Etsy, it's not worth giving that up.

Brand Creators addressed this with a response directly from the Etsy legal team. You CAN use mockups when selling POD as long as it ACCURATELY REPRESENTS the product you are selling. So you cannot use a mockup photo of a Comfort Colors brand sweater when you are actually selling a generic brand sweater. It's misleading. People misrepresent like this all the time which ends with the customer filing item not as described cases. Make sure the photo you are using is of the product you sell, people! If you are selling a Bella + Canvas T-Shirt, use a photo of a Bella + Canvas T-Shirt!! A photographer took the pictures for you to use, it is up to you to ensure they accurately represent your product. So it is kind of a risk to use Ai generated mockups as these often look nothing like the actual product e.g. different collars, seams, sleeve lengths, inaccurate portayal of fit etc
@KaraBuntinTutorials
@KaraBuntinTutorials 16 күн бұрын
Etsy has said that you have use the mock-ups that the company provides. The separate thing is the personalization part, which they’ve now said you can’t use a mock-up for the first photo. This policy is going in place on sept 15 so we’ll find out what they’re going to do then.
@anadan3806
@anadan3806 15 күн бұрын
@@KaraBuntinTutorialsActually, for the personalisation part you mention, it says you cannot use a blank mockup image or a mockup with a placeholder text. It does not say you cannot use a mockup. The main listing image must be an image of a finished product. So for example, a mug mockup image with a picture of a rooster saying Happy Father's Day - that's ok. A mug image which is just a blank mug, or has "Your Design Here" is NOT ok. Also, for Production Partner images, this is what Etsy says: "If you create an original design (e.g. artwork or a pattern) that a production partner prints onto a base item (like a t-shirt or mug), you may use a stock photo mockup to illustrate the end product buyers will receive". So yes you can use a mockup, you just cannot use a blank mockup, or a mockup image of a totally different product, or a random image you found in google. I understand many people are misinterpreting the policies. I hope Etsy can re-word it to avoid all the confusion.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
@KaraBuntinTutorials 15 күн бұрын
@@anadan3806 The reality is that they've written this in a deliberately vague way so that they can enforce it however they want to. And nobody will know what's going to happen until Sept 15, when the policy goes into place. Until then it's all speculation and people interpreting a vague policy the way they want to read it.

You can post it in the about section where they give you the space to do social media links. They don’t say whether that’s allowed or not in the listings themselves, but i would avoid doing it because they links aren’t going to be live links anyway, and it could be contained as being an attempt to take people off platform to sell to them. You could always say to look in your about section to find you on social media and put a link to your about section.
