Thank you so very much for uploading this slice of our 90s YTV childhood. The VJs, the bumpers, the "You Rule!" & "Keep It Weird!" slogans that resonated so strongly with us 90s kids who truly believed in its message. We've never forgotten them after all these years. ReBoot & Beast Wars have been some of the single biggest sources of inspiration & we wouldn't be the same without them. Generation (Y)TV & proud! ✊️

Season One and Two will always be my favorites! Even though the BS&P affected what the show could do in terms of censorship. It gave Reboot a unique sort of zany method of doing things that I enjoyed a lot. Who would think it would take almost 20 years for my to figure out what all that ABC BS&P stuff was referencing. XD Reboot, if anyone makes more. *wink* THE HUB *wink* Should just be Reboot, as it was from Season 1, evolving again into a deeper story.

Literally never heard of these shorts! They never aired in Canada and the wikipedia page for ReBoot has no mention of them. When I was growing up, it seemed like nobody around me gave a damn about ReBoot, now in 2024-2025 people are resurrecting this old show and discovering how awesome it was! Excellent find!

Looks really good for a 30+ year old VHS tape. :) I remember these well, there was actually some kind of glitch on my ABC station where the first Trias Effect clip played with music only, no voice, so when Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad started, I was quite confused and not happy! lol. Thankfully I kept tuning in and ReBoot finally returned.

So this is probably as good a place as any to share my personal first encounter with Reboot. When I was a much younger, the creators of Reboot consented to do a demo of a partial episode at a Macintosh user group in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This was a few months before the first episode aired. I think the logic was in part that Macs has proven they were headed in a similar direction for artistic creator projects. The Mainframe team set up several of the blue horizontal Silicon Graphics workstations in a side room plus one of the black and blue SGI towers and were happy to tour us as much as we wanted through some of the in-progress work on the episode we were going to see part of. They showed us the wire frame shapes of the three main characters plus some early low quality texturing on Megabyte that was used to help get the movements programmed in correctly before the better textures were applied for final render. They showcased their library of mouth shapes they used to get the mouths to match the voice actors believably, quite a contrast to other shows at the time which relied mostly in opening and closing mouth the correct amount but that's about it. Each character had their own set of phonetic shapes, not like today where key points can be mapped to work for multiple character wireframes. Afterward, they used a fairly high end (for it's day) projector to screen a partial episode, but not the first one that was going to be aired. Unfortunately I've seen the series enough that I can't remember which specific episode we saw, only that it had the trio plus Megabyte along with his blue and red hench "bots" Hack and Slash. Of course I was amazed and hooked, extra so because I'm a fan of film and television special effects, and at that time I was already familiar with a number of clunky CGI uses that came before Reboot, both on the screen and in video games of the period. When the show came out on YTV, I did my best to make my world stop to watch. I have rewatched the entire officially released several times on digital, though I'm not sure which rip. Since I was too young at the presentation (a teen in the company of my father who is still a Mac fan), it was very unlikely that I would ever get to work in such a field, but it did inspire me to learn a ton about CAD drawing and very basic digital animation with what I had available (PowerDraw, a predecessor of AutoCad, plus Hypercard and Macromedia Director). Several years after Reboot ended my interest in doing my own digital animation and art waned, but I'm still intensely interested in the behind the scenes work that goes into shows like this so I poke at using Blender and Daz 3D from time to time. I wasn't as into the other Mainframe shows because the subject matter wasn't my thing, but somehow reboot had so much scope for imagining stories, places and incoming games that were never in the original show.

That’s awesome to see the Trias Effect recovered in all of its entirety! And better yet, higher quality! I’ve been wanting this to be unearthed for so long. Also, the scene in the anime Problem Children aka Mondaiji Tachi (the full title is a mouthful, hard to memorize) in episode 5 reminded me of the Medusa Bug where Laeus’s lackeys including Asuka and my girl You Kasukabe were turned to stone. But not to worry, my boy Sakamaki Izayoi saved the day. Brought that up since it reminded me of that episode.

I’m also thinking of doing a remaster of my first full episode edit I did back in December 2016 and including the Trias Effect as a bonus.

ReBoot was originally mastered in 25fps, the DVD Mainframe edition was mastered in 24fps, but the original broadcasts would have been in 60/30 for NTSC. Then factor in analog VHS recording which regularly suffers from degradation and inconsistent frame timing. There has never not been frame rate chicanery with this show lol

@@ThatMovieGuy90s From what we understand, each segment was recorded to an individual tape. In the collection of ReBoot tapes we've logged, there is a tape for segment #5 (the last one) and a tape of Medusa Bug with the alt ending, but we haven't located the other segments yet. It's entirely possible that the other tapes got put in a different box in the archive, or they've just been lost to time. We'll continue to investigate.

But I could never find a solid answer on just how many there were and other than SSSS no agreement on what shows these bumpers were for. Is that SSSS segment the only bumper like this or could there be more in the Mainframe archives?

It's the only one we've found. This tape was an individual's recording as we haven't found anything "official" as of yet. Since it was a temporary production (You can find out more about it in the documentary), it may not have been archived as aggressively as other media. We may come across more as we move forward, but we're currently preserving what we can get before it's lost forever.
