And yes genital warts are indeed contagious, but the truth is that almost all sexually active individuals already have the virus that causes them (HPV). The only reason they don't show on most people is because typically your immune system is healthy/strong enough to keep the virus at bay and prevent an outbreak. Outbreaks can occur in immunocompromised individuals and/or when the immune system is already heavily taxed due to another illness or infection. It should be noted too however that once an individual has contracted the virus, it is possible to transmit even if they do not have any visible warts.
