Did you say that more glass lets in less light? It's the opposite. An f/1.4 lens obviously captures a lot more light than an f/4 lens.

Yes, this lens is not "sharp" wide open but the image it create at f/1.4 are very special, a bokeh that I don't see in my other fast Nikon lenses. This is now one of my favorite Nikon lenses, along with the 105mm f/2.8G and the PC-E 19mm f/4E

No 20mm 1.8 doesn't have coma at 1.8, so this is pretty good. The 20mm 1.8S nikkor is even better. You should look into a star tracker. I shoot this lens at f/2.8 with a tracker, and I can expose for minutes with the best IQ.

I've had one of these for a while and last night shot it on my Fuji 50R with the Steelring adapter. It looks very good on the Fuji as well, impossible to infinity focus on the dial, I had to zoom focus onto a point of light to get the spot which is a very fine adjustment, but I was able to get this very precisely and remove the conical distortion that happens when the focus is not 'dead on'. With the Nikon Z6 I'm assuming you still need to use manual focus for this? Or is it amazing enough to be able to use AF on that kind of subject matter.

Hello, I’ve just purchased this lens and I also intend to use it with a D850. How long can you keep the shutter open before you see noticeable star trails? PhotoPills is suggesting only 10 seconds with this combination. As I haven’t had a chance to use it yet I was wondering what was your experience? Thanks
@MegaKillerwatt4 жыл бұрын
I have this lens and use it on a d750. My exposure times for astrophotography are up to 20 secs. I would also suggest the you go into your custom settings menu and scroll down to Shooting/Display and look for d4 Exposure delay mode. This will get the mirror up and out of the way before the image is taken and can remove some of the shake in the camera.

I sold the Sigma a while ago and am still using the Nikon today. The quality of the Sigma is really nice and I do miss using it. But overall, the Nikon works better for me because it's a better compromise of size, weight, filter thread and image quality.

turn your sound up on future videos, I'm on a macbook which has notoriously poor speakers but the other youtube videos are noticeably louder - just some feedback - no offense, I enjoyed the content. Thanks and great shots!
@MichaelChapmanNatchez4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, I listened to this video on a Macbook as well ... and let me kindly offer a suggestion. Video creators set their audio at -12db which is standard for recording the audio portion of video. If he were to adjust that upward, it would likely distort on any "highs" and hurt peoples' ears who have "normal" performing speakers. If the problem is on your end due to a Macbook's under-performing speakers, it should be up to you to fix the issue. Purchase a pair of decent external speakers to plug into your Macbook, as I have, and the sound is excellent. They even make some that are small but work well for travel.
@mariaevansherborn3 жыл бұрын

Hi! Great Review. Do you think this will give me some good results on a nikon d5300, i used this camera before with a 35mm 1.8g (not the best lens tho but that's what i got at that time). I will shoot some milky way shoots in 15 days so i'm hoping this can get me some results.
@AstrordinaryImaging4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks heaps! The 20mm will be more like a 35mm on a D5300. I like using a 35mm focal length for panoramas but not single frames, it's just not wide enough to capture a large portion of the sky.
