Mine seems to underestimate capacity horribly, there's something wrong with current measurement. So the test setup is USB power supply -> KCX017 -> TP4056 board (modified) -> empty li-ion cell initially discharged to 3V. The charger board is modified with a switch with program resistors 1.2 kOhm/5.6 kOhm corresponding to 1A/200mA-ish charging; since the TP4056 chip regulates the current resistively, you can disregard wire resistance and input voltage etc and just integrate current over time to closely estimate the capacity of the cell, even if the current regulation on the charger board has an offset of some sort, as long as charge termination voltage is correct (it's just a hair north of 4.2V so it's perfect). Not only are the currents captured by KCX lower than expected, the capacity as estimated by it also turns out almost half of the expected, although in principle, this test method should overestimate the capacity, as chemical losses within the cell are not accounted for. Either there's something wrong with it in principle and depending on usage, it can show way too much or way too little; or factory calibration is particularly horrible. I don't expect perfection, but ideally i want to land within 5%, but even within 20% would be acceptable. 30-40% is not even close to acceptable. I might make up some cables to test it against a decent multimeter and my current source, which can also then be used to calibrate it, but i'm not sure it's worth it unless i know that i can get it calibrated within the ballpark. Not seeing whether there's a fundamental design mishap, it's a tough call to make. Zhiyu ZB2L3 while discharging the cell from 4.2 to 3V, which should underestimate its true capacity, shows a value that at a sufficiently low current, is very close to spec figure within expected variation and wear, though i'm not convinced that it's not overestimating. I'm very budget limited though so most things i have, except the 20 year old Mastech multimeter and similarly old ZD soldering station, are a little bit suspicious in quality.

I wish we could give you some useful feedback. Since this video, we've looong since retired this model in our lab. I still have one I use in my travel bag for comparative testing of chargers/cables, but I don't use it for much more than that anymore. I never saw much practical purpose in using a USB coulomb-meter for battery charging as there are so many other variables that can skew practical stored energy in a cell. Yes, if there were published schematics & code available (ah, the wonders of open source), it's be so much easier to debug.

I have this tester. it was ok for 3-4 months and could show my 6V and 2.8A quick charge, but then it won't show above 0.90A on any device and also my phone get only 0.90 from the charger and charges slowly! and when i disconnect the tester it will charge 2.8A normal and fast. any idea to fix the tester?
@Solarbotics
@Solarbotics 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be so sure it's the /tester/ as much as the cable might be wearing out, or the battery is wearing out and the charge circuit is compensating. Try other cables to see if you get a reading difference. I've seen cable charging rates change as their internal conductors break down (they've got multiple metal wires per cable).
@rezamj282
@rezamj282 3 жыл бұрын
@@Solarbotics I tested everything, this tester causes slow charging on all devices regardless of whether cable or battery. when i connect this tester all devices can't get more than 0.90A from every charger and the tester also shows 0.90A. I have to say this tester was connected to a charger all the time for months.
@Solarbotics
@Solarbotics 3 жыл бұрын
@@rezamj282 0.90A doesn't sound like a failure of the meter itself. When I'm using a poor cable/charger I often only get about 0.45A (and about 4.7V). I can't see how it'd be the tester. Either the meter would work or not, as all it's doing is measuring the current flowing through an internal resistance. If it was designed to limited current, it'd be using an active device, like a FET. See lygte-info.dk/review/USBmeter%20KCX-017%20UK.html for an internal image showing the two 50mOhm resistors in parallel that are used to measure the current flow.

Agree about the music. Really bad. I added two parallel wires to the spiral, so that the marble comes in contact with both as it rolls down. It makes for a very jittery, electrically noisy contact (lots of "bounce"). I have a raspberry pi repeatedly read the connectivity, so it sees the connection open and close a lot as the marble rolls. I hash up that signal and use it as one source of random numbers for gaming. It's as geeky as it gets, but it's fun to know weather and chaotic jitter are part of my games.

Why would anybody need to use something like this? Unless you own a hatdware store.. and still then couldnt you use a scale? Or figure out the amount you needed to separate and wind an electromagnet to be just strong enough to pick up said amount of screws..? If they were steel.. but yea a scale and a hopper.. and if wanted to be automatic use an arduino to trigger a stop order, then a linear actuator or a small magnetic release to dump the screws in a bag then repeat.. could set up a carrousel to feed bags with limit switches.. rather than all that mess.. factory automation is a neat thing to look into just to see all the simple ways engineered to complete a process that at another factory could be comprised of many processes to get the same results.. just seems like an expensive way to do something automated in a different way to me.. like even a laser counter or ir diode and receiver connected to a simple counter circuit and a rotary collector device that turns based on a set weight.. put all the screws in a can that spins with a 5v motor like a hopper, drops em through the beam so everytime the beam brakes its line of sight with the receiver it sends signal to a counter which when the counter reaches a desired amount it haults feed until the rotary collector turns to a new container and gets to its set position.. it could all be ran off a 9v battery or 2...
@Solarbotics
@Solarbotics 4 жыл бұрын
It was 8 years ago and we were playing with ways to streamline our screw-counting for our kit building. We've since invested in a proper part-counter with an optical beam-scanner that makes a very rough 3D model of things that pass through it's scanner (400 scans/sec), and does a volumetric evaluation (is it within +/- of desired? Accept!). This unit was a screw-feeder for an automatic screwgun, and was pretty cheap. It proved the point that automating the screw-counting process was worth more investigation. Vibration feeders are pretty neat machines.

@Solarbotics
@Solarbotics 4 жыл бұрын
Translation (thanks Google): I have an LP-E6 with a declared capacity of 2000 mAh. and bought in China. After testing, they showed 3199 and 3269 mAh. Then I tested my native battery bought in 2010 at 1800 mAh. Indications - 3302 mAh. What are the numbers and how big are they? Or is it the real battery capacity? Maybe someone will answer ... I tested using a battery charger for two batteries and the KCX-017 tester is a small, rectangular, white colored case. Really the Chinese began to produce such excellent batteries and so cheap to sell - 21.66 dollars paid for two batteries above the specified and for the charger for two batteries. ----------------- Answer: The capacity measured also depends on how much voltage you allow the battery to fall down to. The KCX-017 measures how much current has passed through it, but it does not act as a battery cut-off. If your battery load does not automatically stop taking power from the battery before the recommended cut-off voltage, you may harm the battery over time. A LiPo battery rated 3.7V charges up to ~4.2V, but should NEVER be allowed to discharge below 3~3.2V. You can keep drawing power below that voltage, but you start to harm the battery.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 2 жыл бұрын
@@Solarbotics While this is relevant from a battery safety perspective, it seems vaguely irrelevant from the capacity estimation perspective, as there's very little actual energy left in a Li-Ion cell once it falls below 3V. Once you reach that threshold, the voltage will fall like a brick if you continue drawing anywhere near substantial amounts of current.

Hi friend. One question, is that I have a Pink Floyd CD called Pulse: edition blinking led, but it was already damaged because it worked with 2 AA batteries and over the years it was sulfated and oxidized everything, the LED is welded to 2 resistors and a mini printed circuit, but I don't know anything about electronics, the point is that I want to know if I could build a replacement using this RGB led, would it work with 2 AA batteries? What could be the mini circuit and resistors for this project? I send you a photo link so you can see how it is. Thank you. vinylconnect.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/img_5648.jpg
@Solarbotics
@Solarbotics 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! The LED is designed to work on a 3V source, so you could replace your original circuit with just the 2 batteries and this LED. You just have to make sure you are connecting it in properly (long leg of the LED goes to the "+"). But it'd be a pity to remove the stock electronics. You might want to find a friend at a local hackerspace that can reheat and resolder the connections. It looks like a very simple circuit, so it shouldn't take much to revive.
