GENIUS Mikhail Pletnev plays Prelude ( Op.21) composed by GENIUS Tchaikovsky. I heard Maestro Mikhail Pletnev on our Canadian radio station this a.m playing Scarlatti. He performed brilliantly! I was thrilled!

Amazing! Remarkable! What a diffucult song cycle performed with such perfection and aplomb. You make sound so easy but its so difficult. I may not understand one word but i dont need to. I "get it !" I'm overwhelmed by it all ! Such control.

I'm a baritone and performed this entire piece in 1973 with the Cal Arts Chamber Ensemble at their auditorium they jokingly called "Roy's Hall" named after Roy Disney.

And Christine Schäfer is a goddess for doing this recording and including these songs. And for just being herself. Brave, metallic, yet soft and sweet voice, with a great mind behind it all. Everything you could want in a singer.

I love this rendition so much and these days I think Loren Redall has the voice to perform it and find a whole new audience that would never have heard of her.

Martha forever, the best interpretation ever like everything she touches. The Third movement is sublime, perfect and could have not been played better.

Listen to the Capet String Quartet to hear how Ravel would have heard this piece. It's a far cry from this bland, modern performance we hear here. Emerson needs to learn about the use of vibrato, portamento, and rubato in music. Why doesn't the current obsession with historically accurate performance ever apply to this music to nineteenth and twentieth century music.

If it can be said that there's a touch of genius in this performance, the 4th movement instantly comes to mind. Her unusually creative, 'blurry' pedalling and masterful control of dynamic shadings conjure up a scene so nightmarish as to never be forgotten. Astonishing!

Les Illuminations, Britten's wonderful Rimbaud cycle for voice and string orchestra, though now largely associated with tenors, was actually composed for soprano soloist (Sophie Wyss, I believe).

Barbara Bonney has just the right voice for this masterpiece of construction, in which the sung parts "duet" with a seemingly divergent 'voice' in the piano writing. Unfortunately Martineau is no Benjamin Britten and, for some reason, the piano microphone levels in the third section fade down then never quite make it back. The composer would never have allowed that through and would, in any case, brought up the support element needed for the last few bars. Knob-twiddling by "engineers" and not very good piano work let down the singer's skill with a pastiche which seldom worked well. During 1940 to 1941 Britten pulled clear of Auden's bossiness (and lapse in poetical quality) and in later Auden settings the composer was confident enough to cut and re-shape lines from Auden's work, notably in the 'Spring Symphony' and the somewhat revised 'Our Hunting Fathers'.
