Alice in my opinion is sloppy writing across the seasons because it just can not be decided if we like the character or not. S1 Nope, awful person and mother. S2 Turns into a boss, slays the house down. S3 Back to bad again, gone from understandably grief stricken to cultist accompanied by the highlight of her emotional abuse of Betty. S4 Good again, demonstrates some character growth, we always love the FP and Alice relationship and she helps Betty in many ways and works to let go of her controlling, manipulative nature. S5 Again grief stricken, she pushes Betty away, at first understandably but then it doesn’t make sense. S6 mainly a prop for the council until she’s controlled by Percival where we can assume her actions are not her own doing. S7 Good and bad, most complex portrayal probably as she loves her daughter but mistreats her in a way we can see as reminiscent of the specific time frame such as shaming of women’s sexuality and liberties, its harder to judge as those standards can’t be judged in comparison to todays standards when aiming to represent said historical standards in the media.
