So please Kurt, tell me one thing. As a beginner should you type or write it down ? Or just listen to stuff like Morse Code Ninja without making notes at all ? I stick to 20/8 for now learning the alphabet but fear that typing and handwriting lets me hit a wall at some point. Worst is typing on a tablet keyboard I found out. Normal keyboard feels good when I just look at the screen. I am very very fast and secure in typing. We got drilled in economy school at a young age. Still don't want to loose the ability to note CW in the field on paper. So I switch between keyboard and pen and paper at the moment. I wonder if listening to lessons like on your channel could give me an extra boost or if I just should listen to CW lessons and stop typing and handwriting at all. Glad we have you, cheers from Bavaria.

Kurt - I am loving the materials you supply, and right now at 4:37 into the 3-letter combos from words at 20 WPM I'm knocking on mid-80% range for correct combos. Thanks! My goal is to hand copy at 20 wpm ('cause a written record is important in emergency comms) and finally I think I'm gonna get there. However, I think my case illustrates that there are differences in learning styles or maybe it is mental capacity. I started my Morse journey with an app that was pure ICR. It used Farnsworth timing and started with characters K and R. When I got to the specified accuracy for those two characters, it added a third, don't remember which. Then a fourth, and so on. I worked hard at it and regularly, but by the time I got to 13 or 14 characters, as if by magic I began confusing "K" and "R." I could hear the difference, just not remember which was which. I gave up and restarted several times with the same result. I don't disagree that ICR is the "right way," it is just that I have some kind of learning limitation that made it not work for me. I tried some other apps and online resources and then purchased an old course based on "wacky association..." for each character. Within a few weeks I could copy the whole alphabet, ten digits, comma, period, slash and question mark at about 5 WPM. That was what I needed for my learning style/mental capacity; "KAN-ga-ROO" and "Ra-PUN-zel" got me over the K/R confusion, and I'm past it. After that I spent quite a bit of time going through the W1AW code practice then came across your excellent materials. I started with your letter/number pairs at 20 wpm, finished all three hours +/- of that and launched into this. It is WORKING! THANKS KURT! And everyone else - don't judge me (and others like me) because we sin differently than you. Yes I know that the wacky associations slow me down. But like the turtle, slow and steady at least gets me there. And there is hope for rehabilitation; sometimes I know the letter before the wacky comes to mind. Amazingly, sometimes I say the wrong wacky under my breath but my hand writes the correct letter.

"Common", cut numbers? I have never heard mixed cut numbers and ordinary numbers. And I've listened to thousands of broadcasts 1 = A 2 = U 3 = V 4 = 4 5 = 5 6 = 6 7 = B 8 = D 9 = 0 On a few amateur websites, 7 is listed as 'G', this is clearly a mistake and I've never heard it used., but it is listed by a number of amateur radio websites.
@KurtZoglmann2 ай бұрын
Fair criticism. The use of full cut numbers tends to be fairly rare. When cut numbers are used, they tend to be when 9, 0, and 1 are sent. The idea was to learn these when you are expecting numbers.
