Lyrics [Verse 1] Waiting on a Sunday afternoon For what I've read between the lines Your lies Feeling like a hand in rusted shame So do you laugh or does it cry? Reply? [Chorus] Leaving on a southern train Only yesterday you lied Promises of what I seemed to be Only watched the time go by All of these things you said to me [Verse 2] Breathing is the hardest thing to do With all I've said and all that's dead for you You lied, goodbye [Chorus] Leaving on a southern train Only yesterday you lied Promises of what I seemed to be Only watched the time go by All of these things I said to you

Just heard this baseline intro in a YT commercial. Had to come listen to the song from 50+ years ago.

I love guys in bed, so I couldnt pray the gay away, couldnt worry my life away, and couldnt see Jesus separated from sin and Satan separated from God like incestual brothers who are each other's soul mates regardless of the pain and pleasure, so I guess that is why I was converted to gaydom when I was 9 years old in 2003, since women are unable to stop trying to get to Heaven, otherwise I'd want every woman. Just my view of masculinity and femininity

It was 1992. May, I think. My college romance of 4+ years had just ended and the yet to be diagnosed depression was beginning to take hold. I fluctuated between out of body experiences and in my own head obsessiveness. I was on my way to my first Dead show. I was indifferent but figured I’d give the experience a try. It was a stadium so the vibes of 70,000 were strong. And fragrant. 😉 I knew two songs going in. We sat pretty close to the field. They came on and went right into this song. Everyone stood and began to buzz. A stream of people headed down the steps and simply flowed over the wall onto the field. What the hell. I joined them. And for a little bit I was free from my thoughts and my own head. I’m still pretty indifferent about them. I never really “got it.” But whenever I hear this song I’m back flying over that wall. Free.

Takes me back to the 1990s, just laying on a blanket listening to the radio and absorbing the sun without a care in the world. Simpler times.

I know this song but I never realized it was a Steely Dan song until this came up in a playlist of Steely Dan hits. Must've been with the original lead singer. Great song. Thanks for posting.

I was just today listening to this song while at the gym, and it occurred to me. Maybe if the all-time loser wasn't crawling down the corridor on his hands and knees, he could be with his woman and his best friend in bed and having fun? Just an idle wonderment...

The harmony is incredible! This is one of my favorite songs. I’m 64 and it’s in my music library on my phone. I gave their greatest hits vinyl album to my son (late 20’s) and he loves their music too!

This is one of those songs you've heard so many times on the radio but until you really take the time to listen to it exclusively you realize that it's actually a song that's taken for granted and it is secretly a masterpiece you've been blessed with for years without even recognizing it.

And then the Beatles came back and went smack. Revolver and then Sgt Peppers. Brian did succeed in topping Rubber Soul however. Once Revolver hit Pet Sounds sounded old and tired. That's how fast things were moving. Revolver and Sgt Peppers still sound fresh today.
