Thermophotovoltaics or molten salt CSP/Brayton Loop pumped is the future of flexible power generation, in the 10-100hr range, as far as I'm concerned - perhaps some other carnot battery medium will work too. Installations need to be in the GWhr range so that the storage vessel S/V ratios are good enough. Variable temperature heat networks, with dispatchable higher temperature heat in distributed diurnal storage systems, could load shift all heat pump into the off peak hours for both electrical energy and heat network distribution capacity. At the end of the day, not having to use electricity, due to higher quality heat being available, is the same generating more.
