Wonderful crisp playing by this group. But why o why the harsh open E string in bar 28? Nothing to suggest this in my copy. Since the excellent leader plays it the same way in the repeat, she clearly intends the note to ring out. But Haydn wrote just a quaver, and it is easily playable without a shift on the A string.

This is my favorite performance. The passion of the performer comes through. Although the members of this group have now changed, I wish to hear them again with the members from this time.
Despite some little blunders in the third part, excellent, i.e. really Haydnish!

This version differs from my sheet music, which I assumed came from Fanny's original score. Is the "coda" something the group made up, or something you discovered she wrote that others, like the person who uploaded to IMSLP, haven't discovered?

This, along with its accompanying Minuet, was the last music Haydn ever wrote. He was physically frail, and though he lived on for quite some time, he required help from a loyal manservant and friends daily. Yet the music, which is beautifully played here, shows absolutely no sign of this ; it is equal to anything else he wrote for this medium - the Minuet (I wish they'd recorded that as well) not at all elegant and stately, but vigorous and full of energy. Yet, having written these two movements of what was meant to be a four-movement quartet, he was unable to continue. Knowing that I think adds something very moving when we listen to the music.

I love the criticism that this quartet isn't as personal as the other late Quartets because of the awkward Lydian mode. Beethoven transforns that F Major A section with each reappearance, and it almost sounds like the violins are actually crying in its final incarnation.

In her wonderful book on Haydn's quartets Rosemary Hughes says of this one: 'Its crowning marvel is the grave and tender scherzo, every instrument on its lowest string. Nowhere else in all music perhaps does C major sound so dark.'
