Lovely job, great to see all the tips should a problem arise! I am the proud owner of 482 which looks about as similar to yours as could be imagined. Its condition is generally very sound if a little tatty but still the best looking boat on the water! The one problem I will have to address is a leak between centreboard housing and keel which I guess I will have to address somehow. Interesting to see you had to deal with the same and how you did it. many thanks, Alistair

I couldn't help noticing some very poor reefing at 2:35 where the aft reef point wasn't lashed down resulting in a lot stress being put on the intermediate reef points. These points are NOT designed to take any stress. They only exist for the purpose of tidying up the sail along the boom. You've very lucky that the mainsail didn't rip. I attach no blame to the children but you adults should know better and you should be teaching the children not only how to reef correctly but also why.
@2120edm3 ай бұрын
Ha. Well noticed. This was my fault. I ran out of bits of string. It was all corrected as soon as we got home... I was caught off guard as the reefing points were added by our local sailmaker before the trip. In my defense I do repair any of the sails that we break. Some of our sails have done over a decade of heavy use.

I have to be honest. When it gets over 5ft at Sea Palling I find it a little terrifying. The waves become a bit random and sometimes the big ones barrel over near the sea defences. I've had some decent down time when kitesurfing on more than one occaision.

@2120edm8 ай бұрын
The northern broads are great. Hickling is a good start and finish point to a trip. The winds are usually a bit more consistent than the Ant and much of the Bure and there is much less cruiser traffic in the summer. In a wayfarer you can get under the bridge at potter. So you can then head past thurne to acle and beyond. All of which is good sailing. You do really need a small outboard though. You can get short duration broads licences from the broads authority. The staff in the tolls office are always very nice, even if the Tolls are quite expensive these days.

Thinking about going here for New Year 24/25 .... a family of beginner skiers (only 1 holiday before, so definitely "blue run" skiers) ... do you think it would suit us? I know it's not a big resort, but I figure it'll take us 3-4 times longer to go down the slopes when we're zig-zagging down the runs at nearly a 90 degree angle :) .... so there would be enough to keep us entertained for a week?
@2120edm11 ай бұрын
Hey, that is a tricky question to answer. The biggest appeal of Sainte Foy used to be the offpiste. With everything being warmer it gets trickier and trickier to find good snow. I still go back to Sainte Foy every year though. Guessing offpiste isn't really your thing yet. I am a very impatient person and I hate queues (and people in general). Sainte Foy has always been much better than any other resort I've been to. In English half term week or French holidays there are queues, but nothing compared to bigger resorts. You can just learn when there will be queues and avoid them (first lift at 9am and 2pm eww). Less queueing = more skiing and fun. I also hate busy pistes. I am also a big guy and cranking out GS turns in the middle of a crowded piste isn't ideal. There are a mixture of pistes now. So there is something for everyone. If you like to cruise around and go long distances, then Sainte Foy is not for you. Personally I prefer 3-4 laps on a really nice piste to work on my turns and stuff. Some people will ski for 4-5 days in resort, then have a couple of days out to Val, Tignes or Rossiere. The high ratio of locals to tourists is definitely a good thing too

Are you guys Norfolk based? I am also in East Anglia, and wanted to know where the best surf spots are? (Also been looking for a local crew to go run some stuff with as my current group are a bit novice... :P)
@2120edm Жыл бұрын
Yea we are mostly from Norfolk. I like Mundesley for surfing. The waves are a bit more mellow than some of the other North Norfolk spots we have. My experience of Runton and Sea Palling is that the waves are steeper and the rides are shorter. Probably bit better for shortboarding, but for kayak surfing Mundesley delivers over and over. It has to be an offshore wind, or I just don't bother 4-5ft is my personal limit at Mundesley. If I do 4-5ft at Runton it's way too scary for me. It is also a little less dependent upon the tide. Low to mid tide is probably best.

@paddlepaddlepaddle8147 Жыл бұрын
What's your thoughts on both boats?
@2120edm Жыл бұрын
I'm a big bloke at 6'5 and 105kg. I'm not a very experienced surf kayaker but I have been playing about for years in the surf in a plastic full slice playboat. The Vulcan felt great immediately. It was fast, lively and just did everything you asked it too. There was plenty of space for me and I was pretty much ready to ask Chris to make one after 5 mins of paddling. It felt like an upgrade to the full slice I had been using. It handled the same, just better. I took the Fusion out as well. That was much much harder to paddle. Tippy, caught edges, really unstable to the point I had to do a constant sculling support stroke. I had one wave that I caught early and got a feel for the speed of the Fusion. What a buzz. I think I then caught an edge and got rolled. I could see the potential though, it was just a totally different league to my full slice. Driving home I didn't know which boat to buy. At some point the practicalities of surfing in Norfolk hit home. Its all beach breaks here and we get smaller crumbly waves. I asked a few friends who had surf boats and in the end settled on a Fusion. I think that was an excellent decision in hindsight. The Fusion has just given me really fabulous surf sessions on days when I would never have caught a wave before. 2-3ft days become great fun. She is quick to paddle out and you can get waves really early. I do also have a megatron now which I take out when the surf is steeper. The mega is great but the Fusion is so much faster. 90% of the time I take the Fusion. She is still tippy, but after a couple of years I now feel really comfortable in her. She is so fast and when the surf gets big she gets me out of trouble time and time again.
