Kramnik is (demonstrably) not a mathematician. He seems confused by precise mathematical claims and challenged to make precise counterclaims. Some of his objections are still worth consideration. 1) Rosenthal focuses on elo- instead of glicko-ratings. Elo is a special case of Glicko. Are the "expected outcomes" Rosenthal used in his analysis still valid for the general case? Or are they lower in general as Kramnik claims? 2) Rosenthal ignores time controls. Glick/Elo ratings are not comparable across different pools of people. That should means ratings at different time controls are not comparable. Rosenthal reports on streaks in one pool of all of Hikaru's games, not multiple pools distinguished by (say) time controls. Kramnik also took objection to Rosenthal's definition of streak. Kramnik claims there are many more. One might argue that Rosenthal should have considered streaks shorter than 30 moves. The disagreement may really be on how to compute the probability of a streak.

@hiroandobey801124 күн бұрын
A thought I had about the article; say Hikaru did cheat (i don't think he did, but for the sake of argument). Just analyzing the chances that he wins based on his elo wouldn't really make sense because he achieved that elo using an engine, so even if the streaks are statistically found to be possible (the probabilities of which are calculated based on his elo), it doesn't really prove anything?
@johansjons351023 күн бұрын
I don't think he did either but I agree that the assumptions should be clarified. But didn't Prof. Rosenthal include other GMs' games in his data for the MCMC?
@johansjons351023 күн бұрын
EDIT: Firstly, wasn't Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) but Monte Carlo only. Secondly, looking at Rosenthal's paper, it seems like the data from the other GMs he had data of wasn't used, which I don't understand the reason for.

In another Professor Jeffrey video (answering questions about statistics from public) he mentioned something statistically improbable happened to himself. He was on vacation to Disneyworld and unexpectedly ran into a extended family member. That may appear at first glance to be improbable but when you consider ALL your vacations and ALL your extended family members it becomes a lot more likely you will eventually run into someone you know. On my last vacation to Disneyworld I also ran into someone I knew and had a good chuckle about it. Great video!

The TL;DR is: 57k games is a lot of games, and what is statistically rare in small number of games becomes statistically common or at least not very rare at all. It's like flipping a coin over and over, if you do it long enough you'll get 10 heads in a row or even 20 and it wouldn't be because you're lucky or the coin is rigged, but simply because of how probability works.

I listen to Henry's accent, as an American, and it doesn't sound like an RP accent. It sounds vaguely Australian, at times. Turns out Henry was born in Essex and has a bit of an Essex accent which is kind of a working class accent. In the UK, there's a very strong association with class which Americans don't fully understand. Americans don't think of an accent as particularly low class or high class, but Brits can tell.
