I have 2 2990 one with the power supply upgrade and it's been peaked and aligned. The other is all old school except the 11 meters conversion and it's never been peaked just aligned.. No other mods at all.. I actually like the unit that hasn't been peaked and modified in many ways better.. It doesn't get hot and the audio is a bit clearer.. The modulation is at 80% and it swings to 50 watts on AM and 150 watts on SSB.. The modified one gets kinda hot and the audio is just a bit harsher not really distorted but raspy. The modified unit bleeds a bit on close by frequencies..I may actually have the modified one set to a lower output and turn the modulation down a bit..
@HAUNTED-HAMАй бұрын
@@johndyson4109 I see this a lot with what is called peaked & tuned, unfortunately many, many techs don’t align the radio properly. Changing the power supply can benefit but it the more you push a radio the hotter it will get. The issue is in the details of the Allignment and not knowing how to peak without sending 3rd, 4th, 5th harmonics across a large section of the band. All that excess is wasted and turned to heat. When power is understood in the form of signal and what is required to gain a S unit or 2 it’s just not worth it. Allignment should have a goal of clear, clean signal and modulation. On AM it’s possible to get a bit more than 100% without distortion.
@johndyson4109Ай бұрын
As long as the dead key is NOT above 4 watts. what it swings to is not an issue anymore with the FCC on 27 Mhz... Unless it's several thousand watts or even a Kw or above.. If you turn your setup into an AM radio broadcast station where you're walking over people on the West Coast and broadcasting from the East Coast there should not be any problems..LOL.. I mean it's mostly common sense and having some good radio ethics and being nice to other operators that want to talk..

I always thought that these radios were a bit inferior to HF amateur radios that were opened up. I always ran low power while in the CB band, and enjoyed conversations there, especially in the sideband frequency area. That was many years ago, and perhaps these 10/11 meter rigs have been improved. Thanks for the tutorial; very well done.

Hello, Congratulations ! I am a beginner in mobile CB. I have just finalized my mobile CB registration with a DX27 helical antenna (1m80) + MC KINLEY+ KL-203P. So I have a beginner's question for you.👇 You must start by configuring (tuning) your antenna in "Tune" mode ('Tune' button activated) to lower the TOS/SWR, do we agree? Then, when the antenna is tuned with the MC KINLEY Tx linear amplifier, I can return to "ByPass" mode (BPS) and use (modulate to AM/FM/SSB) my CB radio? Sincerely

What's your turn around for work on a ranger 2995dx? I live in Philadelphia and it would be cheaper for me to drop off the radio in Mountainside NJ than to ship and insure it. Is that a possibility?
I worked at Sencore for some six years, starting as a factory service technician. The TC162 was my favorite machine to work on. While the service department operated on a "First In, First Out" sequence to repair any incoming product, I was questioned on why I would jump ahead of the month-long backlog to repair only those TC162s on the shelves. My production rating dropped to about 83%. I explained that I had been testing tubes in my Dad's TV shop since I was ten years old, and understood that those testers were essential for a TV technician's business, especially with home service calls. Those TC162 needed to be returned with ASAP an priority to service techs, I said. A few years later I was a Factory Field Technician, writing instruction manuals for new Sencore products.
