Super useful video dude. Would be interesting to see an expansion on the difference between shotguns and condensers in this regard. I've recently swapped to shotgun and finding the positioning a bit harder to maintain consistency - albeit that everything else sounds much better.

Hey Chandler. TBH I've only ever used shotgun mics for spot recording sound effects! I wondered why they were being used for VO when I first saw them being used by US voices many years ago! I can't see how such a pin pointed mic can give the performer much room to perform in, especially if you're moving around a lot. I think the shotgun mics would good for close mic intimate reads when there's not much movement but if you want something to capture movement of the body, and elements of the room, then a condenser with a wider polar pattern would be better

@@ioaudio1 I've had a hugely improved response from clients on the Sennheiser 416 and cheaper models. When clients say "oh you got a new microphone!" that's a generally a good sign. But then I almost entirely do e-learning and audiobooks. For me, the way the direction of the mic cuts mouth sounds and breaths is a life saver. I think you're absolutely right it's a movement thing. I don't think I'd ever use them for computer game work...when I'm lucky enough to get some.

Is that cloud foam merely decorative or is it actually sound treatment? If the latter, what’s the brand?
