I've been a Photoshop user since version 4...before many of you were even born...you don't want to get me started on Lightroom lol...I dumped Adobe years ago for Photolab...never looked back. To be honest, having been in this creative business for decades and having used all the editors you can think of, Photolab is my main go-to editor...yes, it does have some drawbacks like no layers (outside of masking) but there are clever workarounds I've developed in my time. I will be revealing major secrets on my KZbin channel soon enough. Best wishes to all...thank you Marcus...your vid is awesome!!!

Thanks for the tutorial. I have the latest updates to Capture One and also Nik 7 but I'm unable to use the "Switch to" function in the Nik 7 suite...I can use Edit With in CO and it takes me to the selected Nik 7 plug in (say Color Efex) but from there when I select switch to (say Analog Efex) I just get taken back to to CO where I see the created Tif file. I've checked non destructive editing yet It never switches to the other selected Nik plug in. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this useful video. Do you still use mostly Capture One, or are you also using DXO Photolab? I used DXO a lot years ago until I began using Fujifilm gear. At that time DXO didn't want anything to do with X-trans files. It was a shame--it had excellent color and midtone contrast controls, and of course the amazing sharpening feature.

I bought DXO optics Pro 4 back in 2004 I think, used it ever since and stille have it installed. So I recently installed Photolab 7 and I was disappointed by it, not because of its power, because that is still in it, it is very powerful! The problems I encountered where first of all the user interface: only the dark mode available.... Next month I turn 67 and my eyes need a lot more light, so I just hate the dark mode and there is no option to change to a lighter mode, even to read the text on the tools they have to be activated to turn them in to readable text..... Not good! Further more I noticed some very big changes,in the GUI, different set up, different tabs and so on, so that means I had to fight myself again thru that process and I sort of lost my interest in DXO. Probably if you are a newbee to DXO and you have good eyes you will soon love it, as I did once. Now I will use my old version whenever I feel nostalgic since I got myself a subsription on Photoshop and Lightroom. And I must say, I am impressed by lightroom classic, even more than I was with DXO. The masking tools in Lightroom allow me to develop my images top noch, they are intuative and easy to learn. Come to this point let me just give some comments on the Adobe TOS discussion: first of all, I don't use any cloud services; way too dangerous, so I prefer to store and backup locally (and that is probably a lot fatser as well) Second: I don't mind paying a monthly fee of 13€ for using always updated software. Updates are included and that justifies payment, everybody wants to make money don't we? If Adobe would not do this service to keep my software updated, I would that would be a different issue. As for the perpetuate license, that was a pretty stupid move I totally agree! So DXO or Lightroom? For me now its definitely Lightroom Classic, but hey, I always was a proud DXO user and if it weren't for these changes I probably never ever would have switched to Lightroom Classic.

I don't agree. DxO PhotoLab7 is old technique on new bottles. I bought it by accident and found out how bad the masking and the point-based editing works. To make the tool box match other raw editors you have to buy add-ons, and like PL7 they are not cheap. There's no way to regret and have your money back with DxO, unless you allow a technician to enter your computer. The worst part is the unqualified help board, where a clown with a concept list tries to divert your problem. The help forum is dominated of problems with different versions of the many software parts becoming incompatible. The free Darktable is a better raw editor than anything I have experienced with expensive alternatives like CaptureOne, Adobe's ACR, etc.

@@LashahVideo Sadly, PL doesn't support the DNG files from the Pixel 8 Pro (or most recent smartphones). After I posted my comment, I found a thread in the DxO support forums, where it was explained that DxO doesn't consider most smartphone DNG files to be true RAW files, and doesn't support them. The consensus was to edit the DNG file in another program, and save it to TIFF, with a P3 profile. PL CAN open that, but the advanced denoise functions are disabled, and of course, no lens corrections, as DxO doesn't have optical modules for smartphone lenses. It still does a very nice job with my mirrorless camera RAW files. Just wish it could do the smartphone files.

@@LashahVideo I may be wrong but I thought the point is that the Fuji Camera is geared to do the heavy lifting by taking the Raw file from the downloaded version on your Mac/PC, doing the conversion and sending a TIFF file (or JPEG) back to your PC i.e. you can then work on the TIFF in Photoshop/Lightroom/Capture One/whatever etc to produce the final image ready for printing/digital filing. In summary, you are provided with a new Raw/TIFF with most of your settings included. Needs some practice to start with but it's fairly intuitive. In summary, that's why you have to connect the camera but I think Fuji have been cute by keeping it simple, adjusting chromatic aberration and other such techy detail is already catered for by the standard software out there i.e. it's not a RAW processing suite to rival Lightroom/Affinity/Capture One/Camera Raw etc. Hope this makes sense? Good luck

Thank you, Marcus, for this introduction to Dehancer! At the end of the video you say that with Dehancer you can achieve the film look but what exactly is the film look? I’m old enough and have shot film in the past when there was no digital yet but I find it really hard to remember what was so special about film or what was typical for film when compared to digital... Maybe you can briefly elaborate on this or even make a video about it? Thank you! Btw, I’m asking because I would not know what look to go for when using a software like Dehancer. You seem to have a clear vision of what the film look is.
@LashahVideo
@LashahVideo Жыл бұрын
There is a distinct look between digital photos compares to film photos. Digital is often sharper, grainless, and with more contrast. The perfection of the digital devices that creates the photos is its greatest flaw (from excellent metering, flawless autofocusing, low light capabilities, etc.) The limitation of the film is its character. Its unpredictable outcome is its strength. We do everything we can to mimic that limitation of film photos and videos (video is just a series of motion jpegs). Grain produced in most software and digital cameras is monochromatic; dehancer creates both monochromatic and color grain. Dehancer allows you to control your grain in the shadows, highlights, and mid-tones. Dehancer also allows you to sharpen your photo by using high-resolution grain instead of digital pixels. And achieving the best film look from a digital camera requires, in a sense, turning off all sharpening, contrast, noise reduction, and dynamic range from your digital camera. I have a newer video on Dehancer (with a new update), which gives better details on how to use it to get great results. And since my last Dehancer video, they have released a major update with newer GUI and features, so I will be doing another video within the next two weeks. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
