The first Star Trek film had editing and pacing problems, but they were fixed in the director's cut DVD, thus making it one of the best films in the franchise.

Christopher Plummer is his unsurprisingly great in his role. His performance in Royal Hunt of the Sun is incredible.

Star Trek the original motion picture is the best of them all and the only true Star Trek movie. The others are just hollywood movies in Star Trek outfits.

Even though they popularized thumbs up/down, they had the freedom to critique films without worrying about people voting thumbs up or down based upon their review of a film.

Lots of experienced Shakespearean actors have played Klingons. By the way, there are three different definitions for Trekkers, Trekkists, and Trekkies.

Am I the only one who noticed that Ebert was starting to melt in the final minute of the video? Maybe it wasn't the real Roger Ebert, and the impostor's makeup was starting to melt from the hot studio lights.... 😲 Just kidding! I know it was the video quality. 😁

Trek 3 was a really good movie . Don't understand where this not liking it comes from . The Undiscovered Country , to me , was the real end of the original Trek . 🖖

ST3 gets ignored for the same reason that Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 2 does: it's just got the bad luck to be "pretty good" when it's sandwiched between two masterpieces on either side of it.

BS ! This movie was absolutely great! The scene with Sybok, Bones, Spock & Kirk is one of the most intense and heart wrenching in all of Trekdom. The humor is really warming and funny. I love it to this day. These two ‘critics’ are clueless

The Razzie Awards declared this film the Worst Picture of 1989 and Shatner’s performance and directing are also “winners” DeForest Kelley was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor and the people who wrote the script are also nominated, losing against Christopher Atkins and Harlem Nights (respectively)

On a scale of 0 (terrible) to 5 (fantastic), here is how I rate the six original Star Trek films, from worst to best: Star Trek V: 1.3, Star Trek I: 1.8, Star Trek III: 3.1, Star Trek VI: 4.1, Star Trek IV: 4.3, Star Trek II: 4.8. (Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan is CLEARLY the class of the field.)

ST V wasn't the worst - that dubious honor now belongs to the Abrams films. But in its time, it was still better that Star Trek TMP. But even the worst Star Trek movie (with the original cast) is better than a lot of other movies.

I know ILM was otherwise committed, but it wasn't just poor effects that hurt this movie. I wonder if Shatner offered to give back some of the money he was getting to both star in and direct this film in exchange for more time to improve the final cut? Worked for Cameron when he was under the gun trying to finish "Titanic."

So I take it they didn't like it? I'm a trekker and I have to say, I loved their review. Clearly not the best in the franchise, But I would like to see a directors cut, or at least a reedit of the film. Believe it or not, It's not my least favorite either.......

ST: The Motion Picture and Voyage Home are my favorite of the OG ST films. oh how i miss Star Trek.....but i'm very happy it lasted as long as it did. and shame on Kurtzman and Abrams for turning it into braindead, violent, sword fighting schlock. I also don't consider the TNG films canon. WHY producers went in the action "Picard punching aliens" route with the films I'll never know. Nemesis is particularly terrible. Penned by a guy who knew nothing about ST, was butt buddies w/ Brent Spiner so it's another "Data and Picard punch an alien" movie. why are they trying to make ST for mass audience appeal ill never know. just write a damn good story and you'll have a film with legs!

Some people seem to think that a director's cut with improved special effects will save this movie, but Ebert and Siskel are right: the problems start at the script level, and no amount of editing or remastering can fix that.

Roger Ebert has clearly watched a different cut of the movie. They didn’t spend ages with tons of characters cancelling their shore leave, it was about 1 minute. The scenes with the campfire are great as it shows the amazing dynamic and chemistry of the 3 leads so the payoff at the end also works for me. Not sure Ebert has ever liked any sci fi film except Star Wars, he’s much more in the Scorsese film mould. Plus David Warner has loads of lines at the start of the movie? When? As usual Ebert’s opinion is the exact opposite of mine. Apart from the VFX. They clearly suck.
