The slight change made me think. If it’s, “the bay”, then it gains in significance as something fixed in the memory of the speaker as part of an important moment in his mind. The bay. And, “a bay”, in the original, sort of backgrounds it, and emphasizes the flowers. I bet the author considered “a” versus “the”.

I actually had this on a speech because I’m Native American and I had a lot of Native American stuff and I had a boyfriend and he threw it all out in the garbage.

Awww...partners do that sort of thing 😊 Apologies (if needed) for not being a Native American speaker - some people think that is important nowadays. My wife is convinced she was a Native American Shaman in a previous life. Who knows? Thanks for your comment 😊

Thanks for this :) I had a friend in the Wirral, when I was a University student in Liverpool (long time ago), who somewhat in the tradition of the old street performers of the 19th Century would stop occasionally at a street corner and start reciting this. Usually no one around to listen though.
