Hello!I love your vids and I just wanted to ask, do you think it’s possible to master (or learn) the basic fundamentals of jeet kune do via videos, and books?Im a former kickboxer and at the moment I don’t have access to any gyms.So I was just wondering
@evolutionJKD17 күн бұрын
Hi there. No, I don't think you can "master" any martial art from videos. I do think they are a great reference. If you don't have anyone to train with or are looking to explore other options, then I think they are super worth it. It's also a fantastic way to see a different point of view. I have an instructional video that is great for someone like you. It won't make you be a master, but it will give you incredible insight on JKD movement and help you explore the movements. There is quite a lot packed into the each section. If you haven't already, look at the Whiteboard videos. There is a discount in the description!! Here's the first one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJeXd6h9rpxjnMU

I think JKD was far frm complete being bruce lee’s grappling insights was not adapted into it. That also explains why it took him so long to develop the art n he was nvr confident to release its work bcs he knew it was thoroughly incomplete. There were evidences showing he learned judo n bjj frm his frens n did osoto gari throws but i think he had little understanding on adapting it to a framework for it to be part of JKD. Sadly we missed one of the greatest martial artists of our time at a young age. He could’ve pioneered the first ever guide to mixing and balancing the martial arts. But instead JKD only go as far as interceptions n efficient strikes n steps
@evolutionJKD17 күн бұрын
Bruce had a limited grappling background. My understanding is that he left a great deal of that exploration to Larry Hartsell. What I've seen of that is more just basic grappling. I don't consider that a good representation of how to apply the stand up JKD to a grappling environment. This is something, as a wrestler, that I worked on with Jerry Poteet and have continued to expand upon over the past decade or so. Everything that is done from standing should be applied on the ground. My school is named "Evolution" for a reason. We should be building upon what we inherited from others. So many don't. Like you said, Bruce died way to early and we lost so much of what he could have contributed. That leaves it to us to take up what he did forge and take it further. Then pass that on to another generation to take it even further. It should be that future generations are stronger than the generation before, but sadly this is rarely the case amongst JKD people.

A base art is required? lol You haven't got a clue about JKD. Explain Ted Wong coming into JKD without prior martial arts experience. If a base art is required, than why did Bruce Lee teach him JKD from scratch? You must be another Scam Inosanto lineage jkd bull shito concepts guy.

I like your break-down. I started studying Tao and Chinese Buddhism as a young teenager. Never much of a fighter, more of a philosopher. Of course, I read many of Lee's books, have seen his movies hundreds of times, but the one thing that sticks out to me is the scene in ENTER when he brings up 'the art of fighting without fighting'. Outwit your opponent before any blows are thrown. Certainly, JKD is street fighting 'striping away the unnecessary' and one may not have the opportunity to do so (fighting without fighting) , yet often one may have it and can use it, if one isn't a show-off or is more concerned with fighting than teaching a student the art. I guess I'm saying use every weapon available and be as practical as possible to achieve your goal with minimum harm. The ultimate goal is to express Tao. If you see possibly harm to yourself, do what you must and that is all. Much respect, Sifu! I have much to learn from you.

My understanding and ability to grapple helps considerably, but this is actually about striking to counter a grappler. So, if you can't understand what is being presented in a Short, then you should either gain more knowledge or look at what else is being shown before making a comment. And be respectful. Whether you were in a wrestling room, on a BJJ mat, in a ring, or in a martial arts school...that kind of lip would get you wrecked.

@@evolutionJKD you are right in me showing very little respect. i truly am sorry. i apologize, i just couldnt help myself in the moment i saw the video. but im a bjj black belt, and when i see someone who very obviously doesnt know how to grapple very well start teaching things on the ground, i cant help but make fun of it. its just a silly 'technique' that will get yourself or those who would try it in an actual,, live situation 'wrecked' as you call it. im sure you know a lot of things about striking and standing and fighting in general, but this move is just stupid.
@daxdaxter68242 ай бұрын
ESPECIALLY, when you use a bjj term as 'mount' making poeple think you know what youre talking about it. youre just inviting people to make fun of you
@evolutionJKD2 ай бұрын
When looking at pretty much any of the "drilling" done in BJJ, you could say the same things. You seem to be applying a full speed, full intensity mindset to something that is quite obviously a drill. You're also not looking at the video with any sense of discovering something or expanding your knowledge base. Maybe it's just a deficiency in your training that you've never been hit by someone who can generate power in close quarters. They aren't normally found in sport, so it's understandable. BJJ black belt? So what? I know plenty of people who are BJJ black belts. Kind of a thing when you train for over a decade in Los Angeles. I am curious about who your coach is and who you gave you your black belt. You listed on a school page somewhere? When did you start training? I'm pretty easy to look up.
@daxdaxter68242 ай бұрын
im not sure i get your point. im just saying the 'technique' is quite useless. basically, youre opening up your elbows which is the opposite of what you wanna do, if you wanna escape mount. so immediately youre teaching the opposite of the basics which is quite odd imo

This isn’t accurate. The skill level is based on how you practice. Your sensei should be able to guide you no matter what level you are at. Doesn’t matter the martial art, more the person using it.
@evolutionJKD2 ай бұрын
This is about those teaching. The pool of “instructors” in the JKD world has a greatly diminished skill level. I speak to that and why. My opinion. Putting it in other terms. It’s like having someone stop at Brown belt (or even Blue belt) but then claim to be a Shihan and say they can promote you all the way up to 4th degree black belt! Just curious if you have trained with or follow any JKD people, or if you are basing this on your experience in another martial art?

@evolutionJKD3 ай бұрын
100% agree that it will look different from person to person. However, it should still be efficient and powerful and applicable against other skilled martial artists. Differences should be right or left lead, choice of striking point, preferred target area, etc. Ultimately, all martial arts should lead to the same place. JKD was just Bruce’s training manual to get there.

There's a few levels to this. Firstly, there is plenty on my channel if you know a bit about martial arts. To be fair, I haven't posted anything in direct response to Wong, because...well, he's not very good. But you do bring up a very important perspective that is often overlooked by people like me. We don't always present out information in a way for the inexperienced to understand. There is a video of Wong's that showed "self defense" that really made me cringe. Perhaps I can do a comparison between what he "demonstrates" and what I would do instead. Keep in mind that what I would show would come from my experience running security teams in Hollywood, while Wong's stuff looks more like it came from a Hollywood movie set.

Who walks into a real martial art school and tells the owner what to teach? What? You walk into a TKD school you do TKD, you walk into a BJJ school you learn BJJ... The idea that some kid is going to walk into a school and define the curriculum is nonsense... More than that it's up to the school to maintain standards REGARDLESS of what people like and that is the test of a good school... I checked out a JKD school not long ago their wing chun class and it was pathetic - the owner didn't even want to hear what I had to say.... What does that make him? Well it sure doesn't align with this theory...
@evolutionJKD5 ай бұрын
Not sure if you’ve ever had your own school. I’ve experienced it. Things like having mostly 10 year olds, or students loading up on some days but not others. These are some examples. I also find it ironic that you asked a question and then said you walked into a school and tried to tell them what to do! 🤔 The example could also be used to demonstrate how an instructor taking a certain stance turns away some students. Again, not sure if you’ve ever owned your own martial arts school. Ideology and Reality don’t always walk the same path.
@evolutionJKD5 ай бұрын
Another key point we made was about who is available to “walk into the school”. If the only people who ever walk into your school don’t have the aptitude or desire to train to the highest level, then you’ll never have a student reach that highest level no matter how you teach.
