I'll have to disagree. The use of vivid language helps the person reading create an image about what is going on in their mind. It would have been a terrible disservice to start the book with " Jeff was plowing the fields." Well, that doesn't create much of a picture in my mind that's for sure. A teacher should encourage her students to use imagery in their writing.
