I like the video because it validated my feelings, but still, accepting "rhe univited guest" feels like a betrayal to myself. I wouldn't want to betray anyone else, why would I be ok betraying myself? This is what I have to work on.
@JoeOliverContextualConsulting28 күн бұрын
I appreciate this insightful question - it’s an important one. If the invited guest symbolises a challenging aspect of yourself, then acceptance involves consciously selecting a perspective on how you engage with that part of yourself. However, acceptance does not equate to surrendering, giving in, or even having to approve of that aspect. It signifies easing the internal conflict and permitting it to exist as it is. By lessening the resistance, you may find more energy to focus on the aspects of life that hold true value to you.

Cool, glad you liked it. And that's a really nice observation ❤️. I find it a bit like physical fitness - I need to keep working at it to maintain it. If I don't, then I start to lose the ability. But if I keep practicing, it's more likely I'll have it available and ready when I need it

This is a great metaphor, Joe. Let me steal it from you and use it with my clients. Another one I like a lot is the one about an overly helpful friend. If we try to silence him, he will just scream louder and louder.

I agree that it’s important to acknowledge and accept emotions with compassion and benevolence but I wouldn’t say that they are me but rather they are passing sensations that can transform and change like the weather 😊

Totally agree! Seeing our emotions like shifting weather in the big sky is a cool way to step back and view our inner world from a different perspective.

Love this. Great video. Question: can we’re have multiple stories that we fuse with in different situations like ‘I have to be perfect’ ‘people find me annoying’ I’m old and ugly’ etc etc
@JoeOliverContextualConsulting3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Great question. Yes, we can fuse with in various stories or thoughts, across situations - or even within a situation. Sometimes it happens so quickly we don’t even notice it occurring. The ones that tend to cause us the most trouble tend to be the ones that we return to regularly, across lots of different scenarios, and that have been around a long time. Usually they are the ones that just feel true and can come with a real emotional punch to them. They are incredibly hard to reason or argue with and will be quick to come back with supporting evidence to any push back. They often take some time to unpack and build a healthier (defused) relationship with.

Saying the monsters can’t “physically” harm you doesn’t help because emotional pain can absolutely exceed physical pain.
@JoeOliverContextualConsulting8 ай бұрын
Although it's probably true that emotional pain can exceed physical pain, it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges - they are two distinct types of human experiences. While physical pain serves as a warning that we are causing harm and need to stop immediately, emotional pain functions differently. Emotions provide us with valuable information, signalling what we care about, indicating loss or dislike. Physical pain has a clear purpose of self-preservation, whereas emotional pain serves as a guide for our values and relationships. It's important to recognise and honour both types of pain, understanding that they play different roles in our lives.

I did not understand how that related to cognitive decision skills can anyone help me, please Iam suffering from trichotillomania and trying my best to find therapy by myself because no one is around to support
@JoeOliverContextualConsulting Жыл бұрын
The metaphor of the comfort zone illustrates how our decisions can be influenced by old habits and the desire to stay safe. While there's nothing inherently wrong with this, it can hinder us from living the life we truly desire. It's important to remember this at crucial decision points. I strongly encourage you to seek help for your trichotillomania. It can be challenging and painful, but there is definitely hope, and effective therapies like ACT or CBT can make a real difference. These therapies are structured and evidence-based, with a proven track record of helping individuals. Best of luck on your journey.
