Hi Tom, Thanks for the video. What's the proper sequence? Twist, wrist cock, shoulder turn? Wrist cock, twist, shoulder turn? I've seen your other video on wrist cock and shoulder turn, but no twist? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

I like the sequence of twist, shoulder turn, then wristcock. Although it is determined by how close your arms are together at address. If very close it feels like the twist and shoulder turn happen together. Hope this helps

Tom, could another way to look at the elbow tuning inward be also done with the hands supinating back to the ball, That as long as you lead with the hips and keep the right elbow to your side, you can uncoil your hands as hard as you as you want without the blade turning over, if you have created the proper grip. I have a feel like it’s a reversing of the coiling of the left arm up in the downswing, initiated with the hips coming down.
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Ай бұрын
That's another way to feel the left elbow from the top of the backswing. Be careful, because you can uncoil the hands without turning the left elbow but you can not turn the left elbow without turning the hands. Try it.

If you watch the "Hogan's release" video you can see the secret . I have been learning the swing for a year. I'm now a year and a half into this and I found it by accident The cup wrist serves a "purpose" and it's important but it's what he's doing as he's coming through. That's the "secret" there is a reason he says "then you release it at the bottom." It's truly a whipping action!

Hogan did not have any forward shaft lean. So when you swing the club from there, it's perfectly balanced. Tiger leans the shaft forward. You're out of balance from the get-go.

What you did not explain is when to untwist in the down swing.
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Жыл бұрын
The untwist occurs right after the start of the downswing as the arms and hands start to drop at shoulder level, by relaxing the left wrist. This is where you have the feeling that you are carrying a waiter's tray (left hand palm down) to smashing the tray to the ground at impact (left hand palm up). Hope this helps.
@Thesecretofhogansswing

The waiter's tray relates more to the right hand, but the left hand follows the right hand lead.

Of course. Keeping it tight to the body is only for the time before impact. The right elbow in delays the hands and creates more power through the hitting area.

Would setup help with that? Example: setting up withtrail arm externally rotated or opposite?!? I can do it going back but my elbow always slips behind my seam line in transition. I tried DJ's trigger of squeezing arms together/extending trail wrist but I can't seem to keep it there long enough. I do need to slow it down more I guess. Keep reverting to old backswing.
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Жыл бұрын
You have to be patient. To make it a habit takes at least 30 days in a row. Reverting back will happen. Yes slow motion practice will help develop the habit. I'd stay away from short cuts unless you are physically unable. Good Luck.

This does work. For years I had my right elbow out of position. After viewing one of videos 15 years ago perhaps maybe more I finally was able to cure it by keeping the elbows together. I started with a larger ball and worked my way down to a tennis ball. It automatically shortened my swing and greatly increased the coil. Good stuff Tom, thank you. I’m 67

Tom, nice explanation. It dovetails with what is written by Gene Gregston in his book: "Hogan. The Man Who Played For Glory" on page 68-69. There are two secrets at work here in my opinion. One is Ben Hogan's and how he was able to eliminate his hooking, thereby allowing him to hit fades. The second secret is what the general public wants to know, and to me, that is: "How does one swing like Ben Hogan, and why are people not able to copy it." To this second secret, you get all kinds of answers. Several books and videos have been written on the subject and they run the gamut. Fellow pros had different ideas and no one seems to agree on what was the secret to Ben Hogan's swing. I find this comical. We have so much video of the man which clearly shows how he swung the club. People have a hard time trying to copy it because his swing is technically difficult to produce. We don't have access to Mr. Hogan's equipment from back then and frankly, we are not Ben Hogan.
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Жыл бұрын
It's funny how many people want to copy his swing, flaws and all (too much lateral movement, arms not as close together as he would have liked because his body would not cooperate after his accident).

In 5 lessons on page 48 Hogan says the elbows should point to the hips with the pockets of the elbows pointing to the sky, if they’re pointing to the sky there’s not much left to rotate. What am I missing?
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Жыл бұрын
When the arms are approaching the impact area, the left elbow is pointing toward the target, or down the target line. If you do not train your left arm to rotate through impact, the elbow will continue down the line and force the wrists and hands to fire prematurely.

@Thesecretofhogansswing if you release the arms and wrists early it magically stops the turn anyway. I call it black magic cuz its spooky. But that premature release of those angles and that load on the muscles up top shuts off the lower body and trunk turning. You end up with a slap and that fake after the fact move to an awful finish position. Of course the early extension stand up move happens within the other ugliness.
@Thesecretofhogansswing

Yes. You can not do both at the same time. The arms and hands become the driving force pulling the rest of the body to a finish.

Is this technique still taught or in use? It seems that it introduces a complicated variable to an already difficult set of motor skills. That is, the timing of unwinding the wrists pretty much has to be perfect, and hardly anyone has enough time to practice something like this sufficiently, let alone the athletic talent, to put it in use. In Chapter 4 of his book, Jack Nicklaus recommends keeping the left wrist straight.
@Thesecretofhogansswing
@Thesecretofhogansswing Жыл бұрын
Yes it is. But try to see that the wrists are coiling on the backswing until you reach the top. When the lower body initiates the downswing we release the coil or just let go. Try not to see it as a timing issue.

Hello Sir: -- Even as your observation is compelling, Hogan "Big Muscles & Joints" contribute much to his swing action. In keeping with this, my research suggests that the Upper Arms & Shoulder "Joints" rotating in sequence ("1-2") represent the underlying Motor Source of the swing. As such, I regard them as the "Dynamic Duo" that not only supports the Hands, but also automates the Arms, Hips Lats & Legs to function correctly, "Start-2-Finish". -- As such, this Takeaway "Dynamic Duo" produces a 2-Wheel "X" Swing ("Ferris-Carousel" In Flow) that Mr. Hogan could rely on for success in both the Full Swing & Short Game. -- As you well know, the Hogan "Waggle" also goes a long way in explaining "Hand-Wrist Mechanics" that occur while the swing is in motion. -- I might also say it's a genuine "pleasure" to hear someone like yourself who reveres the Forward to the Five Lessons! -- Surely, it will forever be the "bible" in golf and -- hopefully -- my GOLF WINDOW of the Hogan Swing will one day be viewed as a worthy companion. **Thank you for taking the time to report your findings. -- It is rewarding to know that I'm not the only one out here who has something meaningful to contribute. -- Dom Esposito, "aka" DrDom -- Golf Researcher. -- For more, kindly visit my website: GolfNucleus com
