The skill ceiling of this game remains undefeated. After Melee it has just become a softer game.

I was 20 when GameCube came out and could have easily gotten out of video games after finally getting burned out on MvC2 in the arcade. But when I played Melee 4P with the Marvel crew on day 1, it's like video games had reached an all new pinnacle. Not only was it an amazing competitive fighter with a style all it's own, Melee was a Nintendo archive to slowly peel away after years of varied gameplay modes. I ended up rebuying all Nintendo consoles and buying every one since. Melee sparked an obsession that went far beyond Smash Bros, fighting games, and just playing games as a whole. It really was a revolutionary event in my early adulthood.

One thing I never realized gave me a massive advantage. Port priority. Could out grab anybody and I thought I was lord of smash however how is a 12 YO supposed to know of this BS?! I was still beast though even well beyond melee but idk how many tears hath shed over that exploit by thy yee your me.

Love this video and I agree that compared to the other Smash entries, this one is weakest but I wouldn’t call it irrelevant. It was a first of its kind, multiplayer, CROSSOVER, platformer fighting game, that was on the only 3D console that supported 4 players. It ranks up there with the likes of Goldeneye, Mario Kart, WWF, any 4 player title worth its salt. Combine with adjustable rule sets, item switch and it was kinda like a sandbox fighting game in essence. Definitely one of those you had to be there moments. Great video!

Melee shits on any fighting game ever made

What made this game special is that this is the most balanced Smash Bros game of the series. All of the fighters are well-balanced, and your skills can make you unstoppable. You can't really say that a character is OPd in this game, because again, if you're good... You can manage to overcome odds and still win. This is why this game still thrives in the competitive scene today.

As a little sister who grew up with an older brother who's main was Zelda and we mainly only played temple, I got real good real fast😂

Saying no one cares about Smash 64 anymore is legitimately crazy. There are still Smash 64 tournaments. People still regularly request a remaster of the game. This is still very much a beloved iteration of the game.

This game has become the gold standard by which all games of this genre are judged.

I cannot count the number of times I have heard that intro. I was 5 when my older brother and I got the game for Christmas. We poured so many hours into Melee and got quite good at it. We would set silly character restrictions in order to switch things up. A big one we would do was clone vs. clone with some of the pairs. Ganondorf vs. Captain Falcon was a big one we'd do. I grew to enjoy fighting with Ganondorf 😂I still have the same copy of the game, same memory card, and the same console even 23 years later and they all still work like a charm. Love me some Melee. Never enjoyed any other SSB nearly as much as this one. Also, glad to know my brother and I weren't the only ones that would go to the bottom of the Temple for some epic showdowns lol

Smash 64 may not have had the most single-player content. but I'll take it over Smash for Wii U's modes and their lack of substance or Ultimate's World of Light (which is just Classic Mode but with less variety and much longer and much, much, MUCH more repetitive and less replayable). Quality over quantity.

The soundtrack of that game is a very special case in that they all actually feel like they're from their respective games while still being full on remix. The Poké Float is a great example: It sounds and feels just like Pokémon Stadium 64, yet you can clearly hear the instruments being played

I don't remember getting or my first time playing. It's like Spider-Man 2, I just always had the game. That Giga Bowser reveal is still soo hype to this day

In a world where the Xbox and PlayStation have dominated the gaming scene, I remained true to Nintendo because of Smash Bros. Its lead to playing the other games these characters are from. Earthbound was epic when I finally got to play it. Even if I did have to go back a few consoles to play it alongside other titles. F-Zero became one of my favorite racing games for the Super Nintendo, N64, and GameCube. Melee was THE masterpiece that has attracted generations of players to it, even after the release of its successors. Probably put more hours into it than any other game I’ve ever played.

i had the privelage of having enough local friends to play this game insanely multiplayer during its era, so we took it to fighting game leagues and tournaments all over town, I can't even count how many hours of joy this game gave. Definitely era-defining.

4:50 I agree. I always thought that the original smash bros had better “hit” sounds. Some of the smash melee hits sounded so muffled. The big hits weren’t as satisfying compared to the original smash hit sounds.

Haven’t played it in a long time but Melee was an awesome game, it was a big step up from 64. And now ultimate blows them all away.
