Fascinating aurally. But it does confirm that Sibelius was not suited to chamber formats and why he ultimately composed little of it beyond his one string quartet

There are some ragged spots in both the performance and the translation, but that said the genius of the piece shines through and this performance is quite refreshing. I've heard is several times now and really enjoyed it!

Hi Viktor, thank you! Yes, original for chamber string orchestra + flute and clarinet, but strings can be played one for each part...

What a discovery! Two different pieces. This version shows Sibelius as a lonesome monolith, creating deep from his soul, completely without any predecessor or idol.. Chapeau! - Phantastic sound of cl and db..

Superb performance! I Love your tempo and virtuosity and flexibility especially in the RONDO. Arnold Schönberg - I guess - is still smiling happily on his cloud somewhere... Cheers from Berlin Andreas

Sehr gute Aufführung. Man erhält einen sehr guten Eindruck davon, warum die „Mannheimer Schule“ einst so berühmt und angesehen war.

Damn. This is vey good. True story: First time I heard this my fiance at the time (now my wife) and I played hooky from work one day in September 1992. Beautiful day on the front range of Colorado, and we took a drive up I-70 to Georgetown to have us a time. Lo-and-behold, Carl Haas had his radio program on everyday on our local Classical Station (Adventures in Good Music), and on this particular day, he had three conductors in-studio and they were playing his version of "Guess the Composer". This was the final piece, and I was certain it was Mozart...but that too easy. I finally guessed Von Weber (as did one of his guests). No. It was Danzi. I was hooked. So was my soon-to-be-wife. Man, I love this stuff. Thank you so much for this. This is the epitome of "cool". It really is.

Indeed. All my life I thought this was a tone poem inspired by Finnish myth, but the master said that he thought of the Norse sagas when he wrote it. Very interesting texture with this arrangement!

I've been in love with this piece since the early 1980s. I taped a performance off BBC Radio Three (possibly itself a recording of the mid-seventies London Sinfonietta players sessions in All Saint's Church, Petersham) and played it for years on a Walkman. Great for studying or just reading. This rendition feels rather more languid and resonant , especially the first movement.
