This isn't from 1980 - Mentzer's red Basic D&D boxed set wasn't published until 1983 at the earliest. :P Great video though!!

I remember this very well I had it on VHS for years! Ben Elton was perfect for this 'report' he cracks me up! Thanks to Vintage UK TV for sharing this gem! I was only 10 years old when it was broadcast and managed to record it and treasured it for years after...

The credits show copyright MCMLXXXIV, so 1984.

I remember when this was broadcast! I even taped it on VHS. @Guy Fullerton, You're right that it couldn't have been 1980 because I hadn't started gaming yet. Tim Olsen, manager of GW in Hammersmith, says at 10:30 that he has been managing the store 'just over 4 years now, since the beginning of 1980'. That makes it 1984, confirming the year :~)

Such an awesome trip back in time. 👏 Seeing that DM’s intricate map being drawn with graphical tools would be enough to put any budding GM off 😆 but not sure about the ‘1980’ in the title given Ben was reading City of Thieves (Fighting Fantasy didn’t start until 1982) 🤔
